Mince Meat pies are just plain awful no matter what.

10. Yes, Lutefisk, ewww
For those who don't know what it is: It's fish soaked in lye until it develops a translucent jelled texture. It has virtually no flavor, until you add melted bacon fat, butter, and salt on top.

44. One of my relatives described it as tasting like
"warm snot."

I'd amend that to say "slightly solidified warm snot."

I was lucky. My dad was Norwegian, but he hated lutefisk, so it was inflicted upon me only when our church held "lutefisk suppers." Masochists--I mean, people--would come from miles around to partake of it. I never saw the attraction, unless the customers came from the Extra Guilt Synod of the Lutheran church.

By the way, I understand that in modern Norway, lutefisk is considered a historical food for impoverished peasants, kind of like hard tack and salt pork are here.

28. Mince Meat and Plum Pudding
Lean beef, either sirloin or ox-tongue, was generally preferred as the minced meat. Brandy, suet, fruits and spices. Later mince meat blends have omitted the meat. So Don't Ask, Don't Tell, I Guess.

Plum pudding is an easier food to wrap one's senses around, even though it has no plums in it, at least not for the past couple hundred years :P Plums were in the older 17th C. recipe...then later phased out in favor of the lowly raisin, also called a plum...go figure. It also contains suet, flour (or bread), sugar, spices (including ginger), eggs. It's then put it into a cloth, tied (leaving room for expansion) and boiled/steamed. Usually served with a hard sauce laced with rum, brandy or bourbon.

I wouldn't eat either of 'em.

I was thinking it was Burn's Nite which is January 25th - I think.

But whenever it is awful. I think everyone just drinks a whole lot with it to make it go down better.
