Bad fur day: In Jimani, Dominican Republic, a kitten perches on the driest spot in a mud-soaked house -- a filthy mattress. Flooding has killed at least 500 people in the Dominican Republic and Haiti.





Paw for the course: Molly helps Lee Ann Fairlie save a stroke at Hardscrabble Country Club in Fort Smith, Ark. The stray, which now lives in the club's cart barn, batted the wayward putt in the hole.




Mustang meets Dodge Neon: Shaken but uninjured, a horse pokes his head out of the window of a rear-ended trailer in Winnemucca, Nev. Blowing dust apparently blinded the driver.



Ticket-me emu: Taipei's finest attempt to pull over a speeding ostrich in Taiwan's capital. The bird, which was fleeing from a children's petting zoo, eluded capture.



Love at first sight: Two-year-old Kristin necks with Savanna Hannah, a mascot of the San Francisco Zoo's new African Savanna, a 3-acre multi-species habitat.



Mum's the word: Despite a daily dose of birth-control pills, Merah, the sole female orangutan at the St. Louis Zoo, is preggers. But who's the father? Zoo scientists aren't sure, and Merah isn't talking.



Webbed feat: Climbing a 3-foot fence when you're only a half-foot tall ain't exactly duck soup. But these black-bellied whistling ducklings measure up to the task at the University of Houston.
