17. Yeah, but ya gotta love him after his Keith Richards exchange
Richards called him an old queer who writes love songs to dead blondes.

Elton called him a monkey with arthritis.

42. Richards never called him an "old queer"
Furthermore, he was refering to the song 'Candle in the Wind' specifically, and not John's talents as a songwriter. To wit: "It's just a song for dead blondes, now", as opposed to being a song about Marilyn Monroe. John said he "looks like an arthritic monkey onstage", a good deal different than saying, "You are a monkey with arthritis".

In Richards defense, his sister-in-law was dying of cancer when that interview was done.

Beside, I just watched two Elton John specials on television - and he looks like Uncle Fester with a bad wig. I still like him, however. As for Madonna, she needs a good kick in the ass.

my daughter was looking through my CDs. She was looking for "Your Song", but didn't know the title. She doesn't listen to Elton John. It must be her favorite too.

But I like everyone else's choices too! You can't be a kid of the 70s and not have some fond memories of Elton's music.

19. Madman Across the Water
The song, not the album.

It just transports me to a very necessary place: one where loneliness and despair are lessened by being shared. Few songs manage the spirit of that song, and it just shows what he and Bernie Taupin were capable of.

To even try to put such a grey-area kind of song into the pop idiom takes balls, and it'll hold you throughout the years.

41. Since you asked . . .
He sat down at an empty seat with no fanfare and played for about 15 minutes with $25 chips. There was another guy and a woman who were with him and just stood behind him while he played. No one at the table acknowledged him or spoke to him. I am not sure they even recognized him--he was not stage made up. My position at the table gave me a direct view of him and I was not absolutely certain it was him until he left and I mentioned to the dealer what I thought. She said it was him and that he often stopped by her table between his shows. This was at the MGM Grand. He did leave a $25 tip when he left. End of my brush with celebrity...lol

44. I wish you'd put 'Other' in your poll.
I like a lot of those tunes in your poll, but my favorite Elton John-Bernie Taupin song is "Where to Now, St. Peter" -- I think on the TUMBLEWEED CONNECTION album.

That song knocks me out.
