7. I believe he is talking about the time/life music collection
those commercials used to drive me crazy
total stereotyping of the late 60s through
the late 70s music scene.

19. Just start your journey in 1965, and end it in (being kind here) 1973

You'll be OK.

Anything outside the time line doesn't count, since "classic rock" can be defined from the beginning of the psych era to the ending of the country rock era.

Everything else is just recycled trash.

And please, let's not start dragging in bands from the 80's just because you like them. The term "classic rock" defines an ERA, '65-'73 (?).

Just like the term "oldies" is seen as encompassing the time frame of 1956-1972 or so (the golden age of AM radio), classic rock defines the time frame of real underground FM radio (you know, with commercials for independent record stores and head shops, or no commercials at all if it was free-form college). This, then, leaves out (and rightfully so) many of the artists you mentioned.

Classic rock as defined by conventional radio programming is bullshit - the play lists are skewed to hit audience demographics, which is why U2 suddenly becomes "classic." The term in its present-day connotation has virtually no meaning.

Just my 2 cents.

P.S. You forgot Mountain, Moody Blues, Buffalo Springfield and, oh shit don't get me started... :)

20. Totally agree with you on the time-frame and the 'demographic shifting'
The latter is just so much crap.

No way are Counting Crows "classic rock"

Feh. Screw all 'progamming services' and 'canned formats' on radio. Feh.

30. Don't get me wrong. I like a great deal of music beyond Classic Rock...
...and my tastes extend to the 80's and beyond.

I just have a thing about keeping categories straight, is all.

Just don't make me listen to Grunge or Rap. Please. I'm beggin' you.

Edited on Thu Dec-23-04 10:53 PM by SCRUBDASHRUB
Apple Scruffs by George Harrison :)

Now I’ve watched you sitting there
Seen the passers-by all stare
Like you have no place to go
But there’s so much they don’t know about apple scruffs

You’ve been stood around for years
Seen my smiles and touched my tears
How it’s been a long, long time
And how you’ve been on my mind, my apple scruffs

Apple scruffs, apple scruffs
How I love you, how I love you

In the fog and in the rain
Through the pleasures and the pain
On the step outside you stand
With your flowers in your hand, my apple scruffs

While the years they come and go
Now, your love must surely show me
That beyond all time and space
We’re together face to face, my apple scruffs

Apple scruffs, apple scruffs
How I love you, how I love you

32. Impressive list
Of course, my own version would contain a few caveats....

"Van Halen" - does not refer to any record which Sammy Hagar's godawful Republican screeching is a part of.

"Jefferson Airplane/Starship" -ended the last time Paul Kantner & Marty Balin left the band, and the wusses who replaced them couldn't build any cities on rock n roll, let alone corporate cheese.

"Chicago" - ceased to exist when Terry Kath did :(

And I must insist on The Ramones being added to the list for the same reason that the Pistols and the Clash are there.
