Poll question: Sardine Lovers!!! Come out of the pantry and unite!!!
Edited on Thu Dec-23-04 09:01 PM by frictionlessO
I am sick and tired of being told how sardines are gross and all. I am tired of pretending that I'm the only one because some people don't want to be embarrassed.

I know, for a fact that I am not the only one out there who eats sardines with great enthusiasm but cannot share the joy of such a moment for fear of bigoted anti-sardiners reactions.

I know I'm not the only one who enjoys a good run on sentence either.

I ask now all you sardine lovers to rise up and vote! Vote for your favorite sardine. Vote and leave a comment so the world knows your gastronomical pride.

I'm a hot sauce kind of sardiner myself.

These are all the familiar canned varieties I can think of, Ill try and add more if you tell me any I missed

65. funny enough, I like a nice medium red with sardines.... most think
white for fish, but the oil content in the sardines is such that a even bodied red goes well.

93. Sardines in Sardinia
My favorite sardines were served to me at a wonderful little restaurant on the isle of Sardinia.

They were deep fried - kinda like calamari - and were just terrific! A little parsley, lemon, oil and I'm there!

YUM

I used to eat them like that (on white bread) when my Dad was feeding them to me in grammar school.

I can't REMEMBER the last time I ate 'em. I think I lost my taste for 'em.

End of confession.

22. No, Mexican, But Lots of Russian Friends
Don't want to throw the thread off-topic, but yes, Russians treat their vodka the way Japanese treat their tea; with lots of ceremony.

The vodka goes into the freezer and the bottle is then wrapped to keep it cold. It looks like white Karo syrup when it comes out of the bottle.

They eat sardines both in tomato sauce and oil, as well as sprats, then there's pickled tomatoes, mushrooms, cucumbers, and of course baked potatoes, many dense breads and always a plate of salt.

I love it when my threads go way off topic. I love it even more when they do it with every other poster...

32. Radishes! Yes, I did forget!
They like them big so they get hot and spicy!

You seem like the adventurous type, so you might also enjoy some of the stranger pickled mushrooms called slippery jacks. They are very tasty, but they produce a thick clear slime that some people can't deal with; it grosses them out.

I also have Cape Verdian friends who catch large sardines off Cape Cod and barbecue them out doors in the summer. Very different tasting than the canned ones, but they are also fantastic.

33. I came real close to adding fresh sardines to the poll but
that would have skewed the results... its a totally different thing altogether.

I luuurve slippery jacks. Im a fungaphile, and I am always getting to eat some oddball mushroom or another. Wish more people would get into mushrooms, the world would just be a much better place.

I like your sense of palate! open minded taste buds can be hard to find!

37. Fresh sardines! Yum!
Ate tons of little bitty fishies when I was in Calabria, heads and all. Oh my god--so fresh, pulled out of the water that very morning--the perfect way to eat them. And made into fritters, too. If I can't get them that way, then I'll take plain in oil, laid out on nice crusty Italian bread. Perfetto!

I dig mushrooms, too. When I was a vegetarian for a little while, I went on a portobello burger trip, where I would have these sandwiches on whole wheat with stuff like romaine lettuce and sundried tomatoes with mayo--totally satisfying! And there's nothing like a thick sour cream and mixed mushroom soup, all rich and earthy and creamy.

(Okay, I just like food.)

38. If you like Slippery Jacks, You'll Love Paddle Cactus Salad
They taste like crunchy green beans but with the same okra-like slime coating. The hard part is finding them fresh, because they do not preserve well (don't try the canned ones or you will be put off).

http://www.hormel.com/kitchen/glossary.asp?id=35808&catitemid=

The nopalitos and tomato salad recipe is the closest to our homemade, except that they added eggs which we do not. Getting the fresh cheese is hard sometimes, so we make our own with milk and rennet tablets.

20. I've already been outed as a plain in oil aficionado...
I also like pickled herring.

Poem found on the internet:

The Sardine Virgin

Slim, an Arizona cowboy ate sardines with great relish.
Their culinary qualities he greatly embellished.

Sardines canned, salted, smoked or in paste,
He truly, truly loved their salty, fishy taste.

He shared them with his friends 'n dog
With his horse 'n Aunt Maude's ole spotted hawg.

One day he met a pretty little gal named Sue
'n thought he'd like ta share 'em with her too.

He invited Sue to take a romantic mountain ride,
Off they went, two horses, two riders, side by side.

For lunch Slim had gathered grub 'n carefully planned
Cheese 'n bread with wine 'n of course, sardines in a can.

Alas, a sardine virgin was this fair young lass.
Who said across her lips they would never pass!

So for now Slim has ta ride life's trail all alone
'Til he can find a sardine eatin' gal to call his own.

So, if someone opened a can right I would not turn up my nose.

85. Well, back when I was on polar icebreakers, we'd have
pizza night every Saturday. Each week, a different department or division would take over the galley and make pizzas for the rest of the ship. Operations one week, Deckies another, Admin, Engineering, Aviation, etc. Well, when it came time for the Scientists, they would make seaweed and krill pizzas, they were absolutely scrumptius!

87. Fresh seaweed and krill (we were in the Antarctic)
they used a few different types, some were kind of oniony, others had a kind of "meaty" taste, though it wasn't really meaty. The krill tasted like sweet shrimp.

Not sure where you can buy krill, but I'm sure it's available, I think it's one of the more populous items in the ocean. Various types of seaweed are available in lots of health food stores.

97. Plain sardines...
with mayo, celery and olives. Just like the tuna salad I make.

Sometimes,I'm in the mood to mix tuna and sardines together. Maybe even tuna/sardine/egg salad. With very ripe tomato and redleaf lettuce on rye. Or any good bread.

Or, just straight out of the can, and share with the cat. Packed in water, though, the cat won't eat the oil packed tuna or sardines.
