I just got verbally assaulted by a hateful Repuke!

I was at the post office, backing out of my parking spot. A man had just gotten out of his car and I stopped to let him cross in front of my car (the polite thing to do, as it is very cold and windy here today). He didn't cross and he walked up to my window giving me the finger. I assumed he thought I wasn't going to let him cross or something, and I rolled down my window and started to say 'I stopped to let you cross' and he leaned in towards me and said "I'm talking about your bumper stickers, you stupid fucking bitch, you gave me your opinion and now I'm giving you mine - you're a stupid fucking cunt bitch!!" I was rather shocked, and very intimidated, and all I said in response (as I put my window back up) was - "I gave you my opinion a lot less personally than you gave yours. I hope the hate in your heart doesn't consume you. Have a nice day" I think the guy would have hit me if I hadn't been in my car, or kicked my car if we hadn't been in such a public place. The look in his eye was terrifying. It sucked. Still shaking a little - fortunately at work we have Rescue Remedy in our first aid kit :)

he assaulted you. text book definition of it. he put you in fear of imminent harm and an apprehension of an unwarranted physical contact (battery). there aren't magic words that need to be said to amount to an assault. you can report the incident to the police even without knowing his details. i.e. telling them where and when it happened, give a detailed description of the event, and a description of the individual. won't make them run out and start looking for him, but does establish a history of incidents that may be relevant if he becomes more aggressive to you on another occasion or someone else.

Thank you all for your posts. It is so nice to have a place like DU - my first thought when I got back to work after the 'incident' was that I should post in the lounge. I have it in perspective - this wasn't a devastating event, and people get assaulted in much worse ways all the time just for who they are (as opposed to having somewhat snarky bumper stickers). And I put the stickers on my car knowing full well that they may be a little controversial. I am not easily scared, and while this guy freaked me out pretty bad for a minute, now I am just kinda pissed that I had to put up with someone so nasty on this, the eve of the birth of baby jeebus ( :P ) when we are all supposed to be kind and friendly.
