I recommend (to all non-vegetarians) fried turkey. |
|
It is the best turkey you will ever eat, IMO. Granted, it's not the most healthy meal you could eat, and I'm sure that it probably has a stigmata of "Southern/Conservative/Repuke" attached to it, but damn.
I had my first taste of fried turkey this evening and it was excellent.
What does it taste like? Well, it tastes like turkey, but it is the tenderest, juciest turkey I have ever eaten. You could cut the white meat with a fork. White turkey meat is usually dry and tough but not this.
I always ate turkey on Thanksgiving and Christmas because that is what was usually served, but I never really liked it. However, this was different.

get a really big pot, fill it about 1/4 of the way full with peanut oil (or canola oil or hell, even Crisco or Lard if you don't care) and heat it to about 400 degrees. This will probably take about an hour or so. Then take a turkey put it in a basket and drop it in the oil. Cooking time is 3 minutes per pound + 5 minutes. So if you have a 12 pound turkey, that would be 41 minutes.
As for where you could find already prepared turkey in the northwest...I dunno. :-)

9. Thanks for that, gtp1976. |

Sounds like you asked for the recipe. :) I will write in down just in case I get confident to do it. Sounds like something that should be done outside. I shall begin my search for fried turkey! :)

There are several stories about freepers who burn their houses down because they either try to do it inside or put too much oil in to the pot and it overflows.
They actually sell turkey fryers but they are basically really big deep fryers. Sort of like a "fry-daddy" on steroids. :-)

turkey frier,(hate to say it, but try Wal-Mart) and fry it yourself. Do it outside, though.
Seriously, you will NOT regret it.

13. The blue stores have them too. |
|
I saw one in Costco a few months ago.
OTOH, I have no inclination to fry. One of my avocations is accident investigations, and I have read one too many accounts of turkey fryer disasters.... Instead I'll have my fill of turkey cooked on the grill!

5. Guess I'll have to start a turkey war... |

Fried turkey is OK, but I prefer mine cooked on the grill. I have a decrepit old Weber kettle, but she's cooked more turkeys than my oven ever had. I use indirect heat and smoke with whatever wood is in the house, hickory, mesquite, apple, cherry...whatever...but no hemp or tobacco.
If there were such as thing turkey M&Ms grilled turkey would be it, melts in your mouth, not in your hand, and no chocolate mess!
Last weekend I took the turkey carcass grilled from Thanksgiving and made soup with veggies. Gosh it was good.

11. Yes fried turkey is the best. |
|
The only problem I have is doing it this time of year it's so cold that it's hard to keep the peanut oil hot enough outside after the bird is submerged. But boy oh boy it tastes sooooooooo good.
