I'm at work with a splitting headache, eyes going from dry to watery (the contacts are loving this), and a stomach that's pitching and rolling. I missed two days last week with asthma flare ups, and I just can't afford to miss anymore right now. Come on, keep me going, please!

If I could have the right side of my head removed, I'd be so much better! It weighs about 700 pounds right now...fluid in my right ear, sinus pressure....OUCH!

and my asthma flared up with a vengeance. I was alternating Flovent and Advair four times a day. I'm happy to report that it's finally subsided and I've only taken a Singulair pill for the past three days.
Do you have any idea what is causing your current troubles? What about an aspirin, hot tea and a few crackers?

I am a school teacher and right now I'm in the middle of a two week vacation, so I'll talk about anything you would like. I am enjoying the time off, but my SO is visiting her family in California right now and therefore I am rather lonely. I can't wait until Friday when she returns.

I took Spanish and Latin high school, the only one that was offered that I didn't get was French...not enough time for all of them! Naturally, they messed my schedule up, and my freshman year I was placed in native speaker Spanish. My last name started with a "W", so by the time they got around to changing my schedule, all Spanish I classes were full. So, I took Spanish I as a soph, Spanish II and Latin I as a junior, and Latin II as a senior. I'll confess, I don't remember much from Latin, except how to say the pledge. We went to a competition, and we were required to say the American Pledge in Latin.

25. My school used to have a Latin program |
|
but the teacher moved to Maine and the principal never replaced the teacher. This was a serious mistake on the part of my school in my opinion. While the Latin program was extant, the students who took it made excellent scores on the verbal portion of their SATs. Now, that is not the case. I teach in South Carolina and we need to do everything we can to improve the quality of education here.
Before I can even begin to teach German, I must teach most of my students proper English. German operates much like Latin in that nouns decline as per their role in the sentence, etc.

29. The SAT was a huge motivation for me to take Latin |
|
My verbal scores were much higher than my math.
I understand your plight. We lived in SC for three years. My son was four when we moved there, he just turned eleven and I'm still correcting grammar problems. My daughter adds syllables to words (she was two when we moved out there). She brushes her hayare, takes a bayath, and they both have fre-ends.

many people in the area where I teach can put two syllables into ONE LETTER. I wish I could spell out how it is done, but you probably know what I am describing.
Where did you live in SC? I was born and raised in Columbia, but currently reside in Rock Hill (pronounced: Rok Hee-yull) because of my job. However, during my summer vacations, I stay in my family's house in Litchfield Beach about fifteen miles north of Georgetown.

Having taken German all through Jr High and High school... Have the dialogues taught in the books improved any (I've been out of school a LONG time)? I still remember one called "Fussball nein, lemonade ja" although I am sure my spelling is off at this point, plus I don't know how to enter umlauts. :-)

Edited on Mon Dec-27-04 12:18 PM by Dzimbowicz
they are still rather lame. So, when I have students in the more advanced classes, I write (translate) stories from my youth for them to read. An example of one story was when I was fourteen and I went for a drive in my sister's car. The car was a 1957 VW and the brakes went out on me all the way across town. I was able to get the car home safely, using the gears to slow me down and all... but when I made it to the driveway of my house the story becomes funny. I dropped the gearshift into second, killed the ignition, popped the clutch and the engine fired (I expected it to chug to a stop). Since the car was still running, I went right through a picket fence. Then I continue the story with how I tried to hide all of this before everyone returned home.
Stories like these help in that they seem to be more interesting, and they show the students that I was once like they are. At times I will point to myself and say, "This, too (meaning middle age), will happen to you."
BTW, I can only imagine how stimulating "Fußball nein, Limonade ja" could have been.
On Edit: The teens I teach seem to be fascinated with what it was like growing up during the 1960s and 70s. They all want to see the photos of me with shoulder-length hair, but I keep those hidden well away from everyone.

I took two years of German in college many moons ago. I remember in the second year, we were assigned a rather short detective story - longer than a short story but not quite book length - to translate. It was pretty good actually. I don't remember the plot now. It's been so long. The title was "The Fourth Curve" (auf Deutsch "Die Fierte Kurv" or maybe "Kurve" - now I don't even remember enough German to render the title correctly!). Entertaining story though. Anyone know it? :D

39. In my second year of college German |
|
we also read a detective story: "Geheime Mission."
For what it is worth... I find it interesting to discover words which are used in different languages which sound the same, but have different meanings. Your mention of the German word "Kurve" is the Polish word for prostitute. Many Poles have told me how much they laugh when the see the German road sign: "Gefährliche Kurven". The Poles see "Dangerous Prostitutes" in this.
There are others which are more humorous.

9. Do you take Serevent in any form? |
|
I used to have to walk around with my inhaler all the time and now I haven't had an attack in over 5 years. Serevent is the greatest! I used to take it by itself with inhaled Azmacort, but now I take Advair, which includes both Serevent and Azmacort. If you don't take it, ask your doctor about it. It's been a real life saver for me.
In the meantime, feel better. Maybe the news to come out later today with help.

and work for a place that sells pine trees? I live in Houston myself. Seems like trying to sell pine trees to Houstonians might be like trying to sell snow to Eskimos. :D Hope you feel better soon! Here's a tip for selling your boss on the idea that you need to go home. Tell him/them that with your coughing and sneezing, you're afraid you'll spread it all over the place and then everyone will be taking sick time. Right after you say that, cough in his face. }(

It's a landscaping company...they put up a tent and sold trees for the holidays. They actually did well, we had over 800 trees (maybe more), and not too many left now. The leftovers go to Galveston for the erosion stoppage.
It's a small company, and there aren't too many here to infect. They certainly have no problem doing it. Last week, their two year old got sick, ended up on breathing treatments, diagnosed with croup. The guy was also sick, could hardly talk. Next thing I knew, I couldn't breathe either.
I stayed home Thursday because I couldn't breathe, and Friday because I still couldn't breathe, and there was talk of frozen precipitation. We did get sleet during the day, and it snowed that night.
