Oops, I killed my desktop - how do I bring it back? (KDE) |
|
KDE 3.1 in SuSE Linux.
I was changing the appearance of the windows and the KDE bar disappeared. Then the desktop icons vanished along with the background pattern, leaving only a light color and the ability to right mouse click.
I then hit ctrl-alt-esc and clicked on the light color and it disappeared. Now it's black. The only thing up is my emulated Windows box.
Obviously I'm going to download and install the latest drivers. But in the mean time, how do I bring the desktop back?
Thanks!!

XFree, with a control-alt-backspace and logging back in as a user?
You can restart the kicker with a command "kicker" from a terminal prompt or from the run command.

Well, I did ctrl-alt-backspace and it reset. I logged in again. The desktop icons did NOT come back though the kde bar did, with the new appearance. That info is good to know for the future, it negates the need for a hard reset which can be corrupting - thanks!
But when I clicked on ther kde bar, regardless of icon, it would bomb out again. :-(
It doesn't like the theme I selected. (Wooden)
I've switched to GNOME 2.0 right now. Apart from forgetting how to enable the menubar on the top of the screen, I'm able to navigate and continue my business. Once I figure out how to configure KDE from a command prompt, I'll go back in. Until then it's no rush.
When the desktop was totally black, I couldn't even get to a terminal prompt or the run command. :-(
