Will Vancouver Island save Vancouver from the Tsunami?
I've been hearing for years about 'the big one' (earthquake) that is going to level us. Now, we are a Tsunami target. I'm hoping the island will take the brunt. (Sorry, CanuckAmok.)

Maybe I'll move to Florida to get away from all the natural disasters.

1. Florida???? Are you kidding??? You risk hurricanes there
Edited on Tue Dec-28-04 11:47 AM by DinahMoeHum
EVERY SINGLE YEAR!!! August and September, mostly.

They had FOUR of them THIS YEAR ALONE!!, and they're STILL trying to clean up and repair the damage!!

Out of the frying pan and into the fire.

Every place on this planet has a risk of natural disaster of one kind or another. That's the way it is. Earth is a very active planet. There's no getting away from it.

Sheeeesh!

2. You're not a tsunami target.
However, global warning will soon rid us all of Richmond and Delta. At least Fantasy Garden will be no more.

4. When the 'shelf' breaks off the big island of Hawii the wave could be over
Edited on Tue Dec-28-04 12:10 PM by sam sarrha
300 feet high, ti will take out all the major cities of the west coast, the last one 100,000 years ago packed coral into mountian sides over 500 feet above water level in australia.

when the Island off Africa hs a long running land slide off the volcanic mountian the wave will destroy every coastal city and town miles inland along the pacific coast.. the wave will be hundreds of feet tall, florida will be inondated up to 20 miles or more .. it isnt a matter if if but when,, the slump has moved in the last decades.

worst of all is the potential for Methane hydrate to detonate along the pacific coasts, they presently have plans to mine it.

at the end of the last Ice Age when the warm water started flowing into Norway as the ice sheet melted creating the present ocean currents.. a deposit of methane hydrate detonated and threw 100's of cubic miles of dust into the atmosphere causing the ice age to return for 2000 years. NOVA has specials on these things, they might rerun them soon...

11. No, it will not
The question is not if, but when. If a large earthquake were to occur in the body of water off Vancouver, it could very well generate a large localized tsunami, it just depends on the magnitude of the seismic event and where it occurs. You probably have a tsunami warning system in place as Vancouver is on the 'Ring of Fire' and is prone to seismic and volcanic activity.
