What Christmas Present are YOU raving about?
Edited on Tue Dec-28-04 12:30 PM by Red State Rebel
For hubby and me, it was from our son and daughter in law - the gift of time. My son is taking his dad for an overnight trip to the John Deere Tractor plant. Hubby is a classic tractor fanatic having come from a farm family. Being able to take this trip and spend the time alone with his son is fantastic.

My daughter in law is taking me on a riverboat cruise from St. Louis to Kimmswick, a small town that has been "reborn" into Antique and Craft stores and restaurants. Can't wait!

1. I'm not raving about it, but my favorite gift
is my brand spanking new, Yellow (John Kerry signature) barn coat. Although I haven't had a chance to wear it yet, it's too warm.

6. My brother made up a booklet for each of us
It contains the story of our maternal grandfather's life as written up by my mother in a writing class about twenty years ago.

My grandfather's life was amazing. He began as a Latvian peasant in 1884, and by the time he died in 1962, he had been a student in Russia, soldier in two armies, a schoolteacher, and an attorney.

My brother took the account that our mother had written, illustrated it with photographs and paintings of places and people that our grandfather had encountered, all downloaded from the Internet, and had it spiral-bound at Kinko's.

Truly a unique and fascinating gift!

16. I got the BEST Christmas present ever!
Here is the story, as I told it on another bulletin board -

What do you say to someone who gives you the perfect Christmas present? What do you say to someone who has given you what you've longed for for more than a dozen years?

Twelve years ago, my parents sold the house I grew up in. Not long after, it was discovered that our home movies were missing. Twenty-eight reels of G family memories - gone. I have been broken-hearted about that ever since. Most of our records of my childhood Christmases were contained on those movies; Mom and Dad relied more on the movie camera than the still camera. There were also summers running through the sprinkler, splashing in the gutter after a rain storm, birthdays, weddings, and babies.

Monday, my mother emailed my sister in Atlanta and me to say she had sent out boxes of Christmas presents and goodies, but that there was no gift for me or my sister. "Gifts for my girls will come later," was what she said. She hoped the gifts would arrive in time for Christmas.

Wednesday the FedEx box arrived with presents for D and the kids.

Thursday afternoon, a padded envelope came in the mail for me. A small wrapped package was inside.

Last night, when I opened the package amid piles of other presents (candies, clothes, games, DVDs, books, and other toys), I pulled out three DVDs. The first was labeled 1, the second was labeled 2, and the third was labled "Vacation." I had no idea what they were.

D said, "Maybe it's your home movies."

I said, "No, wouldn't they have told us if they'd found them?"

Then my breath caught. "Vacation." Our trip to Glacier National Park in 1968! I almost didn't dare to hope.

D put the first DVD in the player. A title in fancy script came up: G Family Memories. On the screen, I saw the smiling face of my 28-year-old mother. I saw my sisters, ages 4 and 5, tumbling on the floor in front of a Christmas tree. And I saw myself, 18 months old, walking around and playing, and then myself in a white blouse and red velvet jumper, my mother helping me open a Christmas present. It was Christmas 1967, and before the first minute had gone by, I had dissolved into tears. I saw my grandparents. My great-grandmother. The much beloved house in which I was raised. The ghosts of Christmas past had come home.

They found them. They very carefully had the movies converted to DVDs, one set for themselves, and one set for each of their children.

With that one gift, it suddenly became the Best Christmas Ever.

21. That is a treasure!
What a wonderful, thoughtful and obviously meaningful gift! We never did home movies -couldn't afford the camera - and what I would give to see my Nannie and my young, glam Mom on film along with the rest of us rugrats. Christmas was happy choas at our house and my grandmother who was the tidiest human on the planet would just resign herself to a day of watching us act like wild animals while stepping over boxes, wrapping paper, hockey sticks, skates, and the other detrius of Christmas.
Your Mom did a very loving thing - you're lucky to have your memories captured on film.

25. My Roomba
I can't believe I would fall in love with an appliance but he's an absolute dream. On the first day, when he vacuumed my bedroom floor and even got under the bed, I knew I had found a treasure. Since Christmas he's been busy every day. I think my favorite was when he vacuumed my Kitchen before I mopped.
