Drug Dog Gets Laid Off - Can't Find Job
<snip>

CARSON CITY, Nev. -- Carson City's lone canine cop is out of a job after Sheriff Kenny Furlong nixed the department's drug-dog program.

The future of the black lab named Luke was put in limbo in October when city supervisors awarded a former K9 deputy $63,000 after she sued for overtime pay.

Furlong said the settlement prompted his department to review the program. He decided it wasn't proving to be effective.

No other nearby agencies were interested in a drug-sniffing dog.

So Luke -- whose full name is Cool Hand Joe Luke -- now lives with the man who fired him and accompanies the sheriff to his office every day.

2. Our drug dog retired, for health reasons.
The village board gave him to his handler, and he now lives the life of a pampered pet. That sheriff should do the same thing, because the dog has bonded with the K9 officer.

3. retired drug dogs are in high demand as pets
They can't do the job for very long and they're the best trained dogs one could possibly wish for. The local police department has a long waiting list.
