When I Die...I hope people will be honest about it.
i dont do the "respect her cos shes dead even though you hated her when she was alive" thing very well. i dont understand it.

when i die, i hope people wont be obligated to say nice things about me while secretly thinking "glad the bitch is gone"....i just hope they say whatever it is that they feel.

the tsunami is making me morbid...not being able to say i hate homophobes even dead ones is making me feel icky...

rant over!

3. But, you don't want people to say mean/bad things about
you when you die....because your family will overhear/see and they will just be sadder. That is the reason for eulogies. To speak well of the deceased and try to ease the family's suffering. IMO.

also so long as someone is not saying it to my family which is tacky i feel like they should be able to saying it to other people without having to hear "respect the dead".

respect the living and chances are when you are dead people will respect you.

4. Funny, I just walked in the door from a funeral
and am going to just stay dressed to go to another one this evening.

I want people to talk about how wonderful I am, and how great I look in the casket.

I want people to lie-

5. Someone who knew my wife
came up to me a couple of weeks ago, and started out by saying "Y'know, I never really liked your wife..." and proceeded to indicate that he thought she was a bitch.

Not that I care what this bottom feeder thinks, but saying nothing would have been preferable.

18. I can't really explain it
Normally, I'm fairly quick on my feet, but that took me by surprise, and it sort of deep-sixed me for a few days. We'd both known this guy for almost 15 years, too.

ever even mentioning you----"

That said, how are you holding up?

14. I agree.
I don't think anyone's memory deserves any sort of special treatment just because they have passed away. What people truly feel about someone who dies is a reflection mostly of how that someone lived before they died.

Homophobia and racism are merely forms of hate that breed more hate. Anyone who indulges in either or both deserves contempt, for that is how they will be remembered regardless.

However in your case, Lioness, may there be cheerful, kind things that are said to preserve your memory-as long as they are truly sincere.

20. I've told my friends for years that I don't want a funeral
I want something like an Irish wake--people can cry, sure, but tell some funny stories, things I said that made them laugh, goofy things I did by accident (or even on purpose), quirks that I had (even if those quirks made them crazy), and get good and liquored up.

I'd also prefer that they spend money on donations to the American Humane Association, or Amnesty International, or Habitat for Humanity instead of buying a bunch of flowers that I'll never see, anyway. It's like George Carlin said in his act years ago: "The flowers all come at once--too late."

30. well...i actually am not as strident as I appear when I post
I wasn't giving this REggie White asshole too much thought until all these others started posting their self rigteous hatred breeds hatred crap and saying we were like freepers and THAT just set me off. People forget that we are just posting THOUGHTS on a freakin discussion board. Its not like we are outside his house with megaphones. Seems like people of "certain religions" just can't help but feel the need to preach to others. All I can say is that these DUers who are so full of love for assholes better not be posting anything negative or nasty about anybody because I will be watching these hypocrites.

31. I want people to speak well of me while I'm alive...
I was helping out with a Quaker funeral, where anyone who wants to can stand up and talk about the deceased. Normally, it works pretty well, especially if those present know the drill.

People were all pretty good about the deceased - the stories they told summed him up pretty well.

Where I thought I was going to crawl under a pew was when a friend was talking about the widow. She addressed the deceased's mother, and said "M was a very special person, or J wouldn't have married him. I mean, she dated a lot of men before she met your son, I mean a lot of men, and she could have had anybody, but she chose M." It went over the heads of those who didn't know the widow, but those of us who were with her during wild times just put our heads in our hands.

Go ahead and trash me when I'm dead, but please dear god, don't tell any stories about me at someone else's funeral...
