Best Bob Dylan Song of All-Time? -- Besides The Times They Are A-Changin'
Edited on Tue Dec-28-04 06:07 PM by Hatalles
Let me reiterate -- besides "The Times They Are A-Changin'," what is Bob Dylan's greatest song?

Okay, okay... let me scratch that -- your *favorite* Dylan song. :D

My vote: Hurricane

2. Very, very, very tough call.
Probably "Like a Rolling Stone," but I love "Maggie's Farm" because it's pro labor and also deeply angry.

And then there are all those other awesome Dylan songs:

All Along the Watchtower
Shelter From the Storm
Subterranean Homesick Blues
Tangled up in Blue

And...And....I could go on for quite awhile. Love that man.

16. Bingo!
I could say any number of songs, but ten minutes later, I'd be lying because I'd change my mind :)

Visions of Johanna, no wait, Hard Rain's Gonna Fall, no wait, Masters of War, no wait, Desolation Row, no wait, It's Alright Ma, I'm Only Bleeding, no wait . . . see what I mean? :)

5. Tough call, but in the end:
Like a Rolling stone
Dylan said it was the "best song I ever wrote".

14. All Along the Watchtower

"There must be some way out of here," said the joker to the thief,
"There's too much confusion, I can't get no relief.
Businessmen, they drink my wine, plowmen dig my earth,
None of them along the line know what any of it is worth."

"No reason to get excited," the thief, he kindly spoke,
"There are many here among us who feel that life is but a joke.
But you and I, we've been through that, and this is not our fate,
So let us not talk falsely now, the hour is getting late."

All along the watchtower, princes kept the view
While all the women came and went, barefoot servants, too.

Outside in the distance a wildcat did growl,
Two riders were approaching, the wind began to howl.

17. His greatest song is NOT "The Times They Are A-Changing."
It's "Like A Rolling Stone." At least IMHO.

20. Yikes. Naming the greatest may be impossible. Naming just one fave...
... impossible, too!

I'd definitely include Shelter From the Storm, though. Heck, just about all of the songs from Blood On the Tracks. :)

21. Rainy Day Women #12 and 35
There was a DJ on AFN Berlin who USED to do requests. Some guy called the station and asked him to play some Dylan. Don't care which song, just any pre-Christian Dylan.

This poor bastard didn't know Dylan, so he grabbed Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits and played track number one, which is Rainy Day Women.

Rainy Day Women contains the line "everybody must get stoned." The US Commander Berlin called to let them know he didn't think much of AFN's choice of music.

23. Sign on the Window
For the way he sings

"Looks like a-nuthin' but raaa-aain,
sure gonna be wet tonight on Main, Street.
Hope it don't sleee-ee-eeet."

And for the sentiment of

"Build me a cabin, in Utah.
Marry me a wife, catch rainbow trout.
Have a buncha kids who call me, Pa.
That must be what it's all about.
That must be-ee what it's all about."

New Morning is a sweet album.
