I'm not taking the gig... |
|
It's a pre-inaugural party, and I really didn't feel like going through security clearance just to have them say "Oops sorry...No DU members allowed." I'd much rather have the satisfaction of saying "No thanks...I'd rather not be a whore for the rethuglican party's money".
I've played for unpleasant clients before...and refused gigs very rarely, when I just found the client too annoying to deal with (and I can deal with almost anybody).
But I had to ask myself..."Would you play for a celebration of Hitler's? Ok...maybe he's not as bad as Hitler. So would you play for a party for Charles Manson or Jim Jones?"
The answer being a very clear "NO fucking way," I called my friend and suggested the names of a couple of rethug fiddle players I know. I may not get another offer for that day, but at least I won't feel dirty.
I'm hoping I'll get called to play for an antinaugural party.
Let me know if you hear of something.

I'm glad you're in a place where you're comfortable not taking this gig. How could you entertain a room full of celebrating repubs? yech to even being in the room.
An alternative would be to charge them triple your normal rate. Call it the annoying client mark-up.

wouldnt pay double scale; but "would be worth our while".
Well hell...These are the same pricks who think minimum wage is worth people's while. I hope they pay her decently.

7. "worth our while" translates to more new Repub gigs |
|
I doubt you could have stomached that.
Glad to see you went with your conscience. (Even though I facetiously suggested you do otherwise, in the prior thread.)

She said the same thing you did...that it'd be better to have the money go to Democrats. I don't hold it against her, and she respects my view, quirky or not. All is cool. :toast:

"worth your while" probably means that if you behave really nicely, they might give you more work in the future. Oh, and you'll make lots of contacts...

he's a president, playing for him would increase your status. I have extremely liberal musician friends who would love the publicity. Can I give you their numbers...

As I understand it, the pres only shows up to the ball.
There will be others there...prominent rethug supporters...maybe someone like Dummy or Scalia. There's never any publicity playing background music while guests get plastered.
I played a similar party that was attended by the Clintons and the Gores. No biggie.

maybe the repugs would talk about how liberals are ruining the country and you'd get upset, punch a couple of them, go to jail, be on the news, get publicity, be a god to all liberals...maybe you should've gone..

or just show up w/ FW stickers on your instrument case and wearing FW buttons - they would probably throw you out and be at a loss for entertainment & have to break out the Tobey Keith cd's
Could be a lot of fun.

Too bad Ray Benson doesn't feel the same way. Cold day in hell before I listen to / buy / have any interest in Asleep At The Wheel any more.
However, the band name seems more apt than ever, now.

24. If you're not desperate for the cash... |
|
why not play and donate the proceeds to MoveOn, or some other like organization.
It would be even cooler if you could get an RNC cheque issued to you, which you could then just sign over to your fave Dem org. Maybe MoveOn could list the RNC on their donor listing :)

and could not think of anything to say. On one hand a gig is a gig but this one... I am glad you made this decision. I think it is probably the correct one for you. Way to go, I had to play a patriotic concert right after the election. It was Sousa but still, it felt dirty.
