1500+ gmail invites up for grabs
at:

http://isnoop.net/gmailomatic.php

I wanted to post this to the Computer Help and Support Group, but I couldn't since I'm not a donor.

Tin foil hat people, please read this:

http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/wlg/4707

for an explanation of why gmail privacy isn't worse than all other email services.

1. I had a DUer invite me to gmail the other day...
...I have to admit, its pretty good. The search/archive feature is second to none. I already had a personal email on another service, and would find it hard to change that since everyone pretty much is use to that. But, I've turned my business email into the gmail account. I wish I had it for my personal. Works very smooth.

4. Well, Mr Geek
Edited on Wed Dec-29-04 06:01 AM by Gasping4Truth
would you mind to point out to this (apparently stupid) computer user all the other free webmail services that do a better job at filtering out spam?

Even my broadband provider let through a lot of spam until recently, despite boasting for six months about an upcoming spam filter.

5. But your normal ISP does not read your email and
sell what in your email to companies so they target you with spam.

Google is not giving this service away for FREE for nothing

7. You know more than me

What stops my broadband provider - or some unprincipled employee inside that company - from making a quick buck and selling my email content to marketeers?

In absence of evidence - I will not suspect them to do so. And I will think the same of Google, unless you can come up with some striking evidence to the contrary.

Just like any other service provider, the stakes are high for Google when it comes to trust from its users. And unlike my local access provider, every single step they take is scrutinized by a world-wide army of security experts and would-be experts.

If they would want to make a quick buck off their users' email content they would have to outsmart all of these experts. If they fail, the ensuing media storm would kill gmail and probably all of Google.

But you still haven't answered my question in my previous post: could you please name a few free webmail services that are better than gmail? This is a sincere question because I hardly use webmail, be it gmail, hotmail or something else.

And if you're still concerned about your privacy with gmail, what to think about the following combo:

- gmail as POP3 (it's possible)
- Thunderbird with EnigMail (PGP encryption)

(on edit: spelling)

8. Because they said from the start
they were going to read your email and sell the information in them to companies for $$$$$$$$$$.

do you want Karl Rove knowing the amounts of money you give the Democratic party and canidates online... He can buy that information from Google. REad the fine print.

You buy online - then Google can sell everything it knows about your buying habits. -- the books you read, the CDs you order, the airplane trips you take, the meds you use... everything is fair game....

Do not talk about pgp, your confirmations email on purchases do not use pgp do they... Duhhhhhhhh

13. They said from the start
exactly *what* they were going to do.

All other service providers have the same technical abilities to do "content extraction" and "data retention", but not all of them are as honest about it as Google.

It seems to me that all of your concerns relate to webmail and online buying in general, but you single out gmail just because they have a rather honest CYA statement:

http://gmail.google.com/gmail/help/privacy.html

If you don't feel comfortable with the confirmation mails on purchases, then get a new webmail account every 3 months. Alternate between Hotmail, Gmail, AOL, Yahoo and a few other outfits in foreign countries. Now let's see how Karl Rove can keep up with that!

...Thanks for calling me "stupid". Up yours too! Incidentally, I get spam on my comcast cable account all the time, thats even with tons of anti-spam programs. I have never received ONE piece of spam mail on gmail. But, I'm sure you're right, computer geek ....:eyes:

Gmail Scam Used By Phishers To Gather Personal Data

by Dave Murphy

Internet e-mail scammers are using the popularity and allure of Google's Gmail service to phish for personal data, including e-mail addresses and passwords. Gmail e-mail accounts are one of the most coveted holdings for hip and techie Internet users. A quick eBay search proves the popularity of invitations to join Google's upcoming e-mail service that offers 1GB of mail storage.

The current Gmail phish reads "The Gmail Team is proud to announce that we are offering Gmail free invitation packages to the existing Gmail account holders. By now you probably know the key ways in which Gmail differs from traditional webmail services. Searching instead of filing. A free gigabyte of storage. Messages displayed in context as conversations. Just fill in the form below to claim your free invitation package."
Dave's Opinion

Phishing, commonly used via e-mail and the web involve conning unwary users into releasing private data. The cons are best known for their attempts to garner AOL, Citibank, and eBay login usernames and passwords; however, there seems to be no end to how the cons can be applied.
