Any listeners of metal on this message board
I've drifted more towards punk and other types of music in the last year, but I used to listen to it all

Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Venom, Black Sabbath, Metallica, Anthrax, Slayer, Possessed, Celtic Frost, Death, Morbid Angel, Blind Guardian, Iced Earth, Arch Enemy, etc. etc. etc.

2. HELLSPAWN (Earache compilation)
Interesting experiment - pair metal bands with hardcore techno DJs and see what develops. Morbid Angel/Berserker, Napalm Death/Delta 9, etc. My favorite is the Ultraviolence/Hellsau collaboration on Strangled.

3. Yep
Old Megadeth, Metallica, Anthrax, Suicidal Tendencies are among my favorites. I haven't heard too much of the new metal bands, but from what I've heard I'm not as fond of them as the old school stuff. There's still some good metal being made, though.

6. Back when I was in Jr. High, I was huge into metal.
Edited on Wed Dec-29-04 03:02 PM by Beware the Beast Man
A lot of the bands you already posted, including Dark Angel, Death, Death Angel, VoiVod, plus hardcore/crossover stuff like DRI, Corrosion of Conformity, Crumbsuckers, Agnostic Front, SOD, Suicidal, so on and so on.

On edit: you a fan of any doom/stoner rock stuff? I was big into that a couple years ago, and now I'm starting to get a jones for it again.

10. I've been listening to a lot of doom/stoner stuff lately
Electric Wizard's Dopethrone is a great slab.Goatsnake,Sleep,Witchcraft,Burning Witch, and Reverend Bizarre spring quickly to mind.

Hell,I still listen to Voivod,Death (R.I.P. Chuck!),Autopsy, and Carcass. Not to mention the newer death/grindcore bands like Dying Fetus,Decapitated and my fave Pig Destroyer (brutal stuff...be warned. It makes Reign In Blood seem downright mellow).

I'm also really into the more experimental heavyness like Neurosis,Isis,Cult of Luna,Sunn 0))) and even Khanate, which just oozes along in painful fashion (20 minute "songs",drumbeats so far apart they could be used as mile markers!).

Everytime you list bands I swear we hung out together.I listened to every one you just mentioned.

To put out a 52-minute disc consisting of only one song takes balls.

21. heh...the story behind that is funny too
The label they were on originally gave them ten G's to record it but they spent it all on weed and recorded that one track. The label was not pleased :)

23. Have you heard Jello's CD with the Melvins yet?
That might be my next purchase. I heard a bit of it on the radio before I knew who it was, and I was like, "Since when the fuck does Jello Biafra do stoner rock???" It actually sounds pretty good.

25. Yeah,I have it
It reminds me a lot of his project with DOA.There's only one song that I could do without (Yuppie Cadillac),but the rest is awesome I think. The Melvins really tailored their sound to Jello (as my friend says, they gave him the vehicle to drive). The songs Buzzo wrote the music for are really close in spirit to what Jello does,at times sounding like a heavy DK (Enchanted Thoughtfist especially). The songs Jello wrote the music for are pretty damn catchy too.Islamic Bomb and The Lighter Side of Global Terrorism are really cool.Overall I really liked it,but I am biased towards both Jello and the Melvins to start with.If you like Lard,Jello w/DOA or Jello w/NoMeansNo you'll like this one.

7. Been listening to it since '82
And yes, Leviathan by Mastodon is the best of 2004 by far. They just blow minds live.

I'm a thrasher of old and still get into a lot of the underground stuff old and new like Keelhaul, The Lord Weird Slough Feg, Isis, Dillinger Escape Plan, High on Fire, Bongzilla, Neurosis, Cryptopsy, The Chasm, Morbid Angel, DBC, Voivod (mostly older stuff), Coroner, etc.

By far the most original metal band ever, both in their sound and their concept.

19. Mastodon live are incredible
We saw them a couple times last year and they just smoked.I liked Remission better than Leviathan, but the new one is excellent too.

Neurosis' new one,The Eye Of Every Storm is my pick for CD of the year. And my friend just took me too see Isis a couple weeks ago for Christmas.I've seen them a few times now and they are amazing.Panopticon is my second fav of the year.If you like these two bands check out Cult of Luna's new one Salvation. It sounds just like earlier Isis mixed with earlier Neurosis.

High on Fire's new one comes out Feb 1st.I thougt Billy Anderson's production on the last one sucked, but the songs are great once you get past that (HoF was who Mastodon opened for the first time I saw Mastodon).I'm really looking forward to the new disc.

Keelhaul fucking rules. All three of their Cds are great. They need to tour the east coast though dammit!.

Coroner brings back some memories :)

18. The History Of Iron Maiden: Part I - The Early Years...
I got this DVD for Christmas and I'm about halfway through the 1st disc and so far it's excellent. The quality of the footage isn't always great--but most of this was footage thought to be lost or never used before.

The video footage for Live the Rainbow is surprising good as well as the audio. Plus, they perform Remember Tomorrow and Transylvanna live. I'm a fan of both DiAnno and Dickenson. I've always though early Maiden--with DiAnno--has a lot more of the punk vibe that was huge in England at the time. When Bruce joined, they really defined the Maiden sound.

Anyway, if you're a fan of Maiden, I'd recommend checking this DVD out. I don't listen to Maiden nearly as much as I used to, but I'm really enjoying this DVD.

I'm a fan of most of those bands you listed, in addition to newer bands like Shadows Fall, Soilwork, and Susperia. I just bought Susperia's newest album, Unlimited, and it's probably my favorite metal album of the last two or three years. If you've ever head Testament's Low album, that'll give you a good idea of how the album sounds.

On Edit: \m/

24. How's the newer Testament compare to their earlier stuff?
I loved The Legacy and The New Order, but kind of drifted away from them after that.

My friend is a major fan of Shadows Fall and stuff like that.I tend to like the more extreme stuff, but it's still pretty decent.

27. I've never listened to The Legacy, The New Order was okay.
The Gathering is my favorite album, probably because it was my introduction to Testament. Kind of a combination of old-school thrash and death metal. This album also gets bonus points for having Dave Lombardo on the drum kit. I'd like to get First Strike Still Deadly sometime. It's an album of their classic songs re-recorded.

26. I used to listen to a lot of metal back in HS....
but kind of drifted off from it the last few years. I still have an affection for it though. Slayer, Anthrax, Megadeth and old Metallica (emphasis on old) are still great to listen to.

As for newer metal, you should check out Opeth or In Flames. Its good to show that kind of stuff to people who think there's no talent in playing metal.

I agree, serious talent at work there.
