Calling all (or some) DU backyard (and otherwise) mechanics.
Edited on Wed Dec-29-04 07:27 PM by chaska
Wow, was that sentence written by a Democrat, or what?. Ever notice how we have to qualify and nuance everything? ...Just means we're smarter.

So, I'm trying to pass the California smog check. Took it to the mechanic expecting to pay $30. Did that, and failed it (quoth agent 86, "by that much"). Then spent another $60 for the diagnostic thingy. The results of which require that I spend another $240 to replace my EGR valve. Presumably, after that they will release their death grip on my wallet.

Problem is, I'm spending the rent money to do this. So I need to get out as cheap as possible. I investigated this EGR thing (enough to identify it - I had never heard of such an animal before). It looks like all I have to do is take out one screw and unhook/rehook a couple of tubes and an electrical connection. Am I wrong about that? Is there any reason to pay the mechanic $70 to do that? ...Not to mention the overcharge on the part, assuming there is one.

1. What sort of vehicle do you have?
Best purchase I ever made with my vehicle was a book. And an EGR valve is a cakewalk to replace, and should be cheap.

2. It's a '93 Plymouth Voyager.
They quoted $158 for the part. I haven't called around yet. I'm sure it can be had cheaper.

4. Yeah, that's about right
I got mixed up on the valve i had to replace a while back.

Either way, the EGR valve is indeed easy to replace. I suggest picking up a Haynes book at an autoparts store. It'll walk you through all sorts of easy stuff.
