Computer question
I have a computer with windows 98, and I'm in a jam. I'm trying to install some software and I get this message: "1009 Corrupt configuration Registry database."
Any help would be greatly appreciated

1. Sorry....
.... this message indicates that your system registry (a database of entries that contains everything but the kitchen sink, but in this case a lot of driver and installed-software information) is corrupt. It might be missing an entire section, or merely an entry or two, or any number of other problems.

There are tools on the web that will try to scan and fix obvious problems in the registry, but really you have to have a certain amount of technical knowledge to use them. If you are interested - do a search on "registry healer"

You might have to literally rebuild your system - reinstall Windows and all your apps.

2. uh just wait, the blue screen of death is next. . . . . .No seriously, if
I remember correctly, when was the last time you did complete maintenance check of your system?
Like dump cookies, temp folders, virus scan, check for spy-ware and do a defrag.?

I switched to Win2000 Pro a few years ago and at same time installed more memory, have not had the problem since.

3. Since no one else is
answering all I can suggest (and I am not computer saavy at all) is to try using adaware if you don't have it. I scan every week with it and it catches registry stuff. I don't know if it will help your problem but it won't hurt.

You can download it at:

5. Try this little trick
Start >> Run >> type:
scanreg /fix

It seems that some spyware stoppers can mess up a Win98 system. This simple command line registry fix seems to go a long way toward fixing the problem.

6. See if you can do this:
Start
Programs
System Tools
System Information

When this box comes up, look for a utility or tool called Registry Scanner, and also System File Checker. Both are in Win98 but it's been a long time since I've seen one to verify exactly how to get there.

Also if you have a Win98 disk to boot to, see if there is a "repair" option on your disk - this could fix the problem without a reinstall. If the repair option is not there, you can stop the process and reboot.

8. I do remember using those tools, last resort was using floppy and it
usually did the trick. Hated to do it though, always thought I was gonna lose everything. You may also have the floppy program tell you that it does not recognize the system.

I would strongly agree with NiteOwl and use ad-aware. If not mistaken you can download to a floppy and run it that way??

It really does sound like you are out of room on your hard drive and that also cause RAM problems which also causes registry problems.

Good luck.
