5. IIRC he didn't "fail" the audition
He was too good for the band. Theres a pretty hilarious james comment about his audition which I'm not recalling enough to relate.

7. They made a wise choice.
I think if they hired Claypool, too many fans would have viewed him as "Cliff's replacement," especially with his abilities and quirky image. It seems as if they were going for a completely different style of bass player when they hired Newsted. He's not a bad bassist, but he doesn't hold a candle to Cliff. Few do.

at least that's what I wrote in everybody's yearbook my Freshman Year of High School

I can still play most of "Anestesia (Pulling Teeth)" on my bass.
