But of course, we'll hardly spend a dime on it.

Feel safer now?

7. That is the number of US citizens currently reported missing.
Likely some will be found OK, but also likely that more will be added to the missing list.

The effected area is still in chaos.

4. Time to declare a war on earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, hurricanes, etc!
/I've said this before.

/I'm still being sarcastic.

/I still think *'s "war on an abstract noun" is fucking stupid.

14. Confirmed dead numbers are MUCH smaller than the actual
number.

India has probably only identified 7,000 people who are for sure dead.

I'd bet my lunch many, many thousands more are missing and will be found later, if at all.

I don't know about the 3,000 Americans, but it's in the realm of possibility. Several people here locally were involved somehow -- and we had only one or two lost on 9-11.

6. CNN said the total was eight so far!
That's eight as in 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8! How do you get more than 3,000 out of that?

8. From a radio report of number missing.
Which I think will convert to dead pretty efficiently given the nature of the event.

13. "Missing" does not equal "dead"
"Dead" equals "dead"

I'll wait for that number. Believe me, I'm in no hurry.

12. CNN also reported
CNN also reported that thousands of Americans were still missing & unaccounted for. While hopefully this is due to a lack of available communication, I did get an email from a friend in Sri Lanka two days ago...

16. Here's a report from a CBS affiliate and AP
a little confusing, thousands? hundreds? Americans "unaccounted for" and "missing" ?

SOUTH ASIAN TSUNAMI STATE DEPARTMENT RESPONSE

Officials deployed in region to identify missing citizens

By Cam Simpson
Washington Bureau
Published December 30, 2004

WASHINGTON -- Personnel from State Department posts in the Asia-Pacific region are descending on morgues, hospitals, airports and other sites in search of missing Americans--living and dead--hit by the weekend's catastrophe, but the difficult task could take weeks, U.S. officials said Wednesday.

Officially, as many as 3,000 Americans remain unaccounted for in the region, although that number is in constant flux as survivors and their relatives contact the government or others are located.

Twelve Americans have been confirmed dead, but that number is expected to grow.

Reports of mass graves, especially in Thailand, stirred fears that the effort to locate the missing could become even more complicated as Americans fretted that the fate of their loved ones might remain a mystery.

Sweden has over a thousand missing and the British have a large number also. I guess I am surprised at the number of European and Americans there.

24. we shouldn't compare the tsunami with 9/11
9/11 was an act of terrorism and the tsunami was an act of nature.
