1. i did jury duty in june |
|
but wasn't selected. they tend not to when you tell them you've had two murders in your family.
the worst bit about it was that my eldest cat was dying at the time.

9. I am sorry to hear about your family |
|
i hope you are alright now. If I had something like that to state I think it would get me an out. I hope you eldest cat has provided you with many fond memories.
I could tell them I have THOUGHT of murdering some one in the course of my life. I don't relish time away from work and 10.00 per day. With my luck it will something like the Scopes Trial or the OJ Davis trial.

14. yeah, the whole thing was sorta' surrealistic |
|
what with it bringing up the memories of my cousins, and then coming home to fafhrd (the cat) obviously declining day by day. at least he went peacefully at home with us.
my cousins were killed in dec. of '99, so although of course it still hurts, its muted by time now.
thanks for asking.

2. Would you believe I've never been called? |
|
I am 38 years old. I've been a registered voter everywhere I've lived for 20 years. I have never been called for jury duty.

10. Don't feel bad. I'm 52 and this is the 3rd time I had a summons |
|
The times I was in college don't count. Studants always are excused. Just watch what you ask for !

3. How to not get selected: |
|
Say "The police don't arrest innocent people.".
That'll do it.

8. Well, you may have a point... |
|
I'm 37 and I've never been called for jury duty. I think I'd like to serve on a jury...at least once.

11. I think I'd like to also - civic duty and all that. |
|
I don't know why I've never been called, although now that I say that, they'll probably call me!

4. When I was called a few months ago... |
|
One of the first things that was asked was if anyone had a moral or religious objection to passing judgement on fellow citizens. Several people said yes, and none were picked.
Also, the two times I have been called, I was able to have it rescheduled both times for a more convenient time. Maybe you can do that too? I just said it was my first day at my new job (true), and wanted to come back after I'd had time to get started. They gave me two months.
If that's not an option, you can probably tell by the questions the lawyers ask, what they are looking for, and maybe you won't fit the profile based on your answers.

you'll get a short little criminal trial that you don't have to hurt your brain over. No luck would = a 3 month long civil trial that will bore you to death and make you long for your dayjob.

12. So what happens in a trial expected to be very long - |
|
for people who don't have care provisions for their children? I'm the stay-home mother of a preschooler and a toddler. Would I be expected to find short-term daycare or would I get a deferral?

unless they are just short of jurors. When i WANTED to be chosen I never was. Now that I could care less ...... we'll see. I guess it depends on the judge.

7. The jury commissioner was a Democrat, and I was President of College Dems. |
|
the topic came up at a party and the next thing I know, I am excused
that's probably the most "politically connected" I've ever felt
Of course, I could've gotten out of it just telling them that I was enrolled in school. But, hey, like I said, it felt good.
