2. Anne of a Thousand Days is wonderful
Just don't have the kids around to ask "what is a virgin?' since the term virgin comes up in the movie. It happened to my sister with her husband's niece. LOL.

5. Dangerous Liaisons, one of my all time favorites.
I was in a similar mood last week and I rented it and watch it again.
Also a great movie "Queen Margot" based a novel by Dumas which was based on historical events ( the Saint Bartholmew (spell?) Massacre) in France, truly amazing movie.

16. House of Mirth..
very depressing, but if you have a thing for the Victorian Era as I do, you will love the costumes and scenery. 'Babette's Feast'--not exactly a costume drama, but excellent.

7. Sense and Sensibility...Count of Monte Cristo...
Edited on Sat Sep-27-03 07:08 PM by tjdee
Ooh, I love costume dramas....umm...The Count of Monte Cristo was much better than I thought it would be (didn't think it would be bad...hard to explain)...Sense and Sensibility, if you've not seen it (I bet you have) is excellent. Alan Rickman breaks your heart.

I'm having a hard time thinking of some tonight, though!

Remains of the Day...not really costume though, it's set in WWII I believe (away from the war, though)...Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson...

the French know how to do a good costume drama. Also, I second 'Dangeraous Liasons'--great movie. For semi-fluff, 'Dangerous Beauty' is also an entertaining film.

On edit: Need to remember to read ALL replies so as not to dupe.
Sorry.

everyone has seen films like "Amadeus" (one of my all time favorites) but "Dangerous Beauty", one of the most poorly titled movies ever, has sadly been mostly overlooked. It is based on the true story of Veronica Franco, (Cathrine McCormick of "Braveheart" fame) a poet and courtesan in 16th century Venice.Much of the dialog was actually taken from Franco's own letters, and those of the other characters in the story-all of whom were amazingly intelligent and witty. Franco enters into the life of a courtesan when the only other option for her is the nunnery-she is permitted to read and become well educated, unlike other women of her time, and eventually is an unofficial advisor to the city's leadership (women will really appreciate how far we've come after viewing this film)! War comes to Venice, followed by the plague and the spanish inquisition. Franco is accused of being a witch by the cousin (a jilted suiter) of her lover, and stands trial...but I won't tell you what happens from there! The film is produced by the same folks who brought us "Legends of the Fall"-it's beautiful, lush and sexy-almost too dreamy to be a true story, but it is!

10. Nicholas Nickleby
Jim Broadbent is really good as Squeers...Jamie Bell from Billy Elliot as Smike. Charlie Hunnam plays Nicolas. Cast includes Christpher Plummer and Anne Hathaway along with some other familiar faces. I really liked it. Don't think it is on cable yet, but if you get a chance rent it.

I would suggest Lion in Winter - I count it as one of the all time greatest movies ever, costume and otherwise!

23. Not sure about availability
But "The Scarlet Pimpernel" with Leslie Howard and Merle Oberon is one of my all time favorites, because Leslie Howard is amazing! The costumes are ok - typical 30's Hollywood over-the-top.

32. La Nuit de Varennes
Louis XIV trying to escape his fate. It's a comedy, though. He and his family share a carriage with Marcello Mastroianni as an aging Casanova.

Or how about Gerard Depardieu in The Return of Martin Guerre?

38. Cyrano de Bergerac
The Gerard Depardieu version from a few years ago.

And they're not exactly typical "costume drama," but "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead" and "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen" are both extremely cool and extremely strange.

39. Dr. Zhivago
Fits all your criteria, and it's a wonderful movie.

Probably will have to go to netflix for that one ... but if you live in a large city you might find lots of good things at your local libraries.

I'm fortunate in that Milwaukee County's libraries have pretty much everything, between 30 or so libraries. I can have anything in the entire collection delivered to my local library for pickup, for free... at least until our repug county exec feels like cutting their budget.
