My understanding is many people hated The Royal Tenanbaums
Why? The movie rocked.

2. I hate anything that's popular.
Just kidding! I thought it was a good movie. I'd probably give it a 6/10, and I'm pretty picky. (For perspective, I'd honestly give The Matrix a 1.5/10. Flame away!)

6. The John Wayne movie? I've never seen it. n/t
Edited on Fri Dec-31-04 04:03 AM by theorist
addition on edit:

Some of the films that I think are about as perfect as it gets are Casablanca, The Maltese Falcon, Memento. (I'm admittedly partial to crime dramas.)

9. Greatest American Movie
Only movie John Wayne was the bad guy. Watch it. Every movie since had a bit of it in it.

4. It sucked when comparing to Rushmore...
that is why someone such as myself might make that comment.
I'm curious to see what comes of "The Life Aquatic"

8. Saw it last night
However, when I see movies inthe theater I like all of them until I get 10 days distance. But as a middle aged guy, I liked the film. Plus, they had Iggy Stooge in the soundtrack.

17. Yes, exactly...and another thing for me was the directing style.
That guy's style worked- once. With Rushmore. I think he can only get you with it that one time, though. When he tries to do it again it just comes off as contrived.

Or John Ford. Or Sergio Leone.

Gimmie a break.

31. The pretentious style of Rushmore worked mostly because of the
extremely pretentious character that the movie revolved around. That character was absent in the Royal Tenenbaums, and the style stuck out like a sore thumb.

29. I thought it was a matter of casting...
Jason Schwartzman was just divine in Rushmore. So was Bill Murray.
And perhaps I found the story less compelling than the Rushmore story. It was just a perfect capture of being 15 years old. Standing on its own, TRT could be entertaining, but it is the ugly stepsister to Rushmore. :)

32. I didn't know that he did Bottle Rocket, too, but
it seems to me that style wasn't there in that movie. And, yes, it was very good.

5. The pretensions got pretty cloying for me after a while
That, and Gwenyth Paltrow couldn't act her way out of a paper hat. Gene Hackman was good, though--and some parts of it were hilarious.

10. Gene Hackman is always good.
and Royal Tennenbaums is his best, next to French Connection (I and II) and Mississippi Burning, of course.

The Hotel New Hampshire, or The World According to Garp, in some ways.

12. Loved it
I didn't think I would like it because of the previews. But two friends of mine, who had both recommended lots of great movies in the past, swore by it. I've seen it twice, and liked it even more the second time.

22. Well, the reason it's my favorite movie is because...
...it is like looking at my own family. Royal Tenenbaum IS my father to a T!

27. Gene Hackman and Kumar Pallana MADE that movie
Angelica Huston and Danny Glover didn't disappoint either

I liked it more than I do The Life Aquatic, and the characters' histories reminded me of Salinger's Glass family chronicles

Well . . . almost. I did watch other stuff in between. I had a REALLY long flight from shanghai to Rome, and all the other movies on the plane sucked.

The acting, the music, I loved every minute of it.

It made me like both Gweneth Paltrow and Ben Stiller.
