How would baseball players from 1900 stack up against today's players?
Every time I look at old photos of players from the deadball era, they look like a bunch of weaklings. Yes looks can be deceiving, but they just don't look anything like the monsters we have today.

Would Walter Johnson have racked up 416 victories if he played from 1970 to 1990? Makes you wonder.

Just for fun I would really love to go back in time and watch one of these old ballgames just to see how great these guys really were.

1. Then again, how many contemporary player would

like to play against Ty Cobb.

Reported the meanest SOB to play the game.

2. Lot less power but they would probably play very well
They hardly ever struck out, they put the ball in play, they were fast and the were mean. The strike out part is big. If you put the ball in play and can move, you can really disrupt things. Plus their pitchers felt nothing about putting a ball in your head and turning you into a vegetable. On the whole, though, our guys are much bigger, faster and better trained. I think we would win.

3. Casey Stengel once said..
that if they had batting helmets in their day, Manager John McGraw would have told them to go out there and get hit on the head.

4. Steroids might be the difference
You only need to go back twenty years to see real ballplayers....they used to have normal muscle mass and much less injuries. Some estimates go over 70% of current players are using illegal substances to gain an edge. Compare Joe Di Maggio's body to Barry Bond's, whose head and body size grew huge in the last three years.

5. You don't have to go back to Joe D
Just go back to Mike Schmidt, Andre Dawson, and the guys who ruled the 70's and 80's. The best hitters from '78-'89 never hit 50 HR's in a single year. Those guys looked like wires compared to guys of the '90's and today.

Personally I wish we could have the ballplayers back from the 1900's it was the last time my team won the WS- 1908 Chicago Cubs!

6. The guys today don't play as hard as they did
back in the early days of baseball. Of course the guys today cost a whole lot more. I think, though they may be in better physical shape than say Ty Cobb or Babe Ruth, they are weaker in many ways. I mean if they hurt themselves in ANY way it's like 15 days on the disabled list and for this they get paid MILLIONS!
