Anybody have a completely sober New Years Eve like me and
Mrs bearfan ? This was my first New Years Eve in about 25 years that I wasn't completely wasted, falling down drunk, stoned to the bone, and passing out. I stayed awake until after midnight easy. I don't party any more, haven't since July 5th. Any squares on DU besides me and Mrs bearfan ?

1. We had slightly less sober event here at Chez GOPisEvil.
No serious drunken binging though. It was a nice night, filled with LOTS of food.

Spinach-artichoke dip, queso, hummus, brownies, veggies, chicken with lime and peppers and onions, pita...I'm still stuffed.

50. That's wild that we share the same anniversary, but...
I stopped believing in coincidences a long time ago---
there's just a lot of shit that happens for reasons that I don't understand, and for reasons that I don't have to understand.
I just try to keep it simple and stay grateful.
Wishing you the best for the new year.

6. Sober
I went to a champagne tasting and got a little buzzed from it (even a mild hangover! )

I felt so buzzed from that I didn't feel like drinking anymore when I got home. I still have the champagen bottle in the fridge.

7. Yes.
I don't drink, so I don't know if it counts or not. As usual, I did zkr, lit a candle, and prayed. I've done that for a number of years. This year, I know there are many who have lost friends and loved ones, and, being an empathetic sort, I feel their pain and loss. Praying for them helped, I think.

Sober and feeling great this a.m.
I haven't had a wasted New Years in years. I can't stand hang overs and the overindulgence of alcohol makes me feel so bad, I lose the next day, which I can't stand. I'd rather be square and save a day, than "cool" and lose one.

A Happy New Year to you and Mrs. bearfan!

drinking lots of Pepsi, but that's about it :)

I haven't had any alcohol since early June or so. Just haven't really wanted any.

So yeah, I'm square too :) I'd rather be round though, fewer corners to hurt yourself on :)

12. Drinking and celebrating because a calender tells you it's time seems
sorta dumb to me. Every day is a special occasion and one might do well to celebrate them all in a mindful fashion.

Drinking is fine, but seems better to do it when the mood really strikes and not when some arbitrary date and cultural habits dictate.

No, you were not alone. I played cards and just enjoyed the company of my companions. That can be intoxicating enough when done properly;)

Happy, Happy New Year!

47. Where WAS the West Wing marathon this year?!!
I emailed Bravo, and complained where was the WW marathon on Christmas??...as it is now part of my Holiday ritual to enjoy WW Marathons.

They emailed back, and told me they do NOT have "rights" to WW on weekends. So in the future, WW-fans...pencil that in. On years in which the holidays fall on weekends, you'll have to rely on other "marathons" to keep you occupied!

24. I had a completely WEIRD New Year's Eve.
We had dinner with the old people here at the retirement apartments. They had champaigne and sparkling grape juice, and added hats, horns, and noisemakers to the tables. Our whole family sat together at one table: Mom & Dad, Brother, S-in-law, & their 2 kids.

After dinner, we came upstairs and had Christmas together. The only ones drinking were my brother & sister-in-law, who started to get drowsy around 8 p.m. They left at 10, Dad went to bed, and Mom stayed up with me until midnight.

I spent time on DU after everyone went to sleep, then closed the evening reading more from Kitty Kelley's book. :)

Things sure do change. But it was a nice evening.

I Drink Alone
George Thorogood

I drink alone, yeah, with nobody else
I drink alone, yeah, with nobody else
Well you know when I drink alone, I prefer to be by myself
Now every morning just before breakfast, I don't want no coffee or tea
Just me and good Buddy Wiser, that's all I ever need
'Cause I drink alone, yeah, with nobody else
Yeah, you know when I drink alone, I prefer to be by myself
Yeah the other day I laid sleeping and I woke from a terrible dream
So I called up my friend Jack Daniel's and his partner Jimmy Beam
And we drank alone, yeah, with nobody else
Yes, you know when I drink alone, I prefer to be by myself
Yeah the other night I got invited to a party, but I stayed home instead
Just me and my pal Johnny Walker, and his brothers Black and Red
And we drank alone, yeah, with nobody else
You know when I drink alone, I prefer to be by myself
Now I have got me a pet up in my penthouse but he never does bothers me
He ain't no poodle, no pony, he's just a little old wild turkey
And we drink alone, yeah, with nobody else
That's the way I like it
Yeah, you know when I drink alone, I prefer to be by myself
Yes, you know when I drink alone, I don't want nobody else
I drink alone

27. I always have a sober NYE...but I do not consider myself
square.

A few weeks ago a co-worker had a 50th birthday party for herself. She rented a hall and hired a DJ. I was out there on the dance floor making a fool of myself (but having fun). Those who did not know me well assumed I was drunk but I was not. I was just having a good time.

29. I am so very square
In 1981 I came to understand that alcohol was not satisfying my thirst for freedom ( freedom from what? you name it!). In fact, the opposite was happening.

Initially, facing reality with nothing added was scary. Eventually, that choice became more comfortable and natural.

Happy New Year!
Friend of Bill

PS....going through one of my cookbooks recently I came upon this on a slip of paper used as a page marker-

Snowfall

Though it is winter, winter bleak
With all this world's un-flowering,
Flowers, flowers fall from the sky.

An impossible thing:
Unless, in worlds beyond those clouds,
Who knows, it could be spring.

- Kiyowara no Fukayabu (9th century)

34. Not TOTAL, but pretty much...
Made lots of appetizers for my family and from around 7 'til 11 I consumed a whopping 2 beers. The kids had sparkling cider at 12 and we parents had approx. a quarter glass of champagne. We haven't been out or drank much on New Year's Eve in over a decade. Kids and family life had that effect on us.

And boy am I thankful.

I almost didn't go to the party last night, but all of the revelers kept it cool.

I walked in, said Happy New Year, and announced that I was the Designated Driver - kind of to break the ice because I think some don't know how to deal with me since I don't (but used to ) drink.

It drew a laff cause they were all within staggering distance of home.

I haven't had alcohol for 7 years now. Never was much of a drinker, but my body got VERY angry at me at a Christmas party back in 97, so I learned my lesson.

Besides that, I ALWAYS have to work on New Years Eve, and always found drunken cooking to be more of a challenge than I can handle.

HAPPY 2005 TO ALL!!

Put the kidlets to bed, wished hubby a happy new year and in bed myself by 10. I don't like New Year's celebrations. I can never find a sitter to go out and it all seems so contrived, anyway. Plus I haven't had a drink for almost 14 years, and it is a holiday dedicated to getting wasted, so there is that, too.

I do remember waking up at 1:00am, thought I would put something on radio, when I woke up at 6 the radio was off, guess I didn't stay awake long enough to turn it on. Usually if I wake up like that I do not go back to sleep. If you have a sleeping problem go buy this wonderful pillow. It makes you want to sleep.

I enjoyed one of those little Starbucks double-shot cans, and then a powerade 'energy drink - aka 43g of sugar' later on. It made it easier to pull over quickly and discretely with all my functions working when my passenger decided she needed to puke NOW :-)

Probably since I was about 15. I've been a heavy drinker ever since I turned 21 and I had many excursions before that. My parents would actually buy me and my teenage friends alcohol on occasion. I'm now 32 and I haven't had a drink in about a month. I feel much better.

62. Me
I went to a party and there was no alcohol. The people were nice enough and we played trivial pursuit.

This wasn't my original plan, but we had a good time nevertheless.

65. Not much of a drinker to begin with
bought a 10th of champagne, cracked it around 11:30, had 1 glass, and promptly went to sleep. Well nearly promptly, anyway

Congrats bearfan454, on your first non-drinking New Years Celebration in decades!

I hope that 2005 brings you and the Mrs and the rest of your family all the joy and happiness the your sobriety deserves to earn!

:hi:
