Ukraine city gorges on giant cake

Residents of the southern Ukrainian city of Odessa have marked New Year's Day by gorging on a giant cake baked specially for the occasion.

It took just 15 minutes for party-goers in the city centre to devour the cake, which weighed in at 400 kg.

Correspondents say the Black Sea port is known for its peculiar traditions during festivals and celebrations.

The cake, decorated with sugar trees, animals and snowmen, was sliced into 2,005 pieces and given to revellers.


It was topped with a sugar cockerel - 2005 being the year of the cockerel according to the Chinese lunar calendar.
