1. If freaks out when you try to open Firefox?
Or when you start the computer?

2. I had trouble when I opened it. DU has a forum somewhere for it.
I'm sure someone else will post & tell you where to go. If not, the Ask the Administrators fourum can give you a hint at where to ask.

I think it's called Computers & tech support group. something like that. They fixed my Firefox installation problem too (I run on Windows 98.)

5. OS info would help
providing your computer info (processor & amount of RAM) and operating system version would help.

I have known mozilla & firefox become really sluggish if your color depth is below 16-bits (65,536 colors).

6. Can you give a better description?
Edited on Sat Jan-01-05 01:04 AM by sub.theory
What do you mean by "freaks out"? Are you getting any errors? Does your machine lock up?

Edit: You did download the file directly from mozilla.org right? Also, yeah, machine specs would be helpful.

8. Well yes. First Mozilla and then Firefox
But the very first download gave IE and Microsoft the burps. The second download of Mozilla worked like a charm. Transferring over to Firefox from Mozilla was a breeze.

20. don't be that confident
IE has been targeted because of weaknesses in security because of ActiveX... but also because it was so popular. As Mozilla grows in popularity, it too will be targeted. And lest we forget most spyware doesn't self-install... it's included as part of some other program that someone foolishly downloads... programs like Bonzi Buddy, Comet Cursor, various help bars. You should get a free program such as AdAware SE to do periodic scans of your system.

9. Download The Full Installation Here
Unzip to the desired directory, then run by executing (clicking) firefox.exe

(does not need an installer, will make necessary app setup on first run)

http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/1.0/win32/en-US/Firefox%201.0.zip

13. first off, back up settings, and then clean things
try to back up your settings/files, then dump all your IE saved temporary files (you rarely need to keep them, especially if you have broadband), they take up space.

next, if you have Lavasoft's Ad Aware program (which you should have), use that to get rid of any spyware/adware.

then run your antivirus program/s (which you should have), run any checkup programs, run any 'cleanup' software, empty you trash, restart, etc.... essentially scrub your computer clean, good hygiene is important in PCs too.

9 times out of 10 (since it's really hard to help people without seriously knowing *everything* about what's going on over where you are) cleaning everything to a nice fresh state helps. and since you admit that you are a bit of a novice, most of our help is going to waste your time unless we start cleaning things up a bit to a nice state of even. because, otherwise, there could be fragments of problem data floating about (that we cannot find because we aren't there to walk you through this) -- and why work around such problems with so many variables when you can simplify the equation and do it with less variables? :D

once that's done, the program should download easily and the install wizard should be pretty simple. but if it is not, no loss, you did some major house cleaning that should have been done a while ago.

go do that and come back to us. it should work that way. (also, though there shouldn't be any separate versions of firefox for win98, double check to make sure that the windows firefox program you downloaded is win98 compatible (it should be, but i forget))

14. I think there's a Win 9x/ME version and a Win2000/XP version
That maybe the problem, too.

16. yeah, it's those little things that throw people off
i don't know if that was the problem, but i can't tell you how many times i screwed up something real simple like putting video cable into audio port or forgetting to set the jumpers right on a harddrive or something.

it's those little things that get you in trouble shooting.

that's why starting at the beginning with a clean slate and going meticulously step by step really helps.

22. Is there a documented install bug that people've said on tech forums?
I highly doubt that Apple would make OS X to prohibit 3rd party software from loading, but it's nice to know that OS X is not as perfect as everybody claims it is.

24. Um, the software was developed by a third party, not Apple
So the bugs are not the fault of Apple.

25. And if you should run into any problems
there is a Firefox support forum here http://forums.mozillazine.org that can provide help for users with problems or questions related to installing and running Firefox.

This is a link to a page with configuration tips and tricks for Firefox.

26. Now go to
http://www.pcflank.com/ and check your firewall and browser for security. "Stealthed" is what you want to see. I have found the Mozilla forums unhelpful and full of Rwingers and fundies. The best browser is Opera.
