I watched " Salvador" for the first time last night.
It was a great film and could have applied to Iraq....in 1981, about 30,000 people were killed by right-wing death squads backed by the U.S.

Wish they'd do a film on John Negroponte and the death squads he operated while in Nicaragua. Now in Iraq after replacing Paul Bremer.

9. Yeah, thanks!!!!!!!
I don't know why that wasn't coming to me. He is a good actor, very intense in this film. I haven't seen Salvador since the 80's. My dad rewatched it a month or so ago. Maybe I'll get it and rewatch it again. Thanks

6. Of the true, rabid, frothing at the mouth...
variety. I was shocked to learn it as well, after seeing the film at the theatre, considering the film content.

11. James Wood could play John Negroponte as the right wing
death squad figure.

There is a slight resembling.

4. It's a great movie. Ironically, it stars James Wood, who
is a right-wing nut case. He must have been desperate for work, otherwise I can't see him taking the part. Of course, it's possible he didn't understand the movie!

12. James Woods is not a right wingnut. He was a traditional Dem who just got
caught up in his own role in the 9-11 tragedy, when he witnessed the rehearsal flight from Boston that was taken a month before and he became part of the story, brought in closer deliberately by the FBI.

I have no doubt he has mixed feelings about the Bush administration and has not lost all his senses.

17. Videodrome was a horror movie about the mis-use of power
by the media, Ghosts of the Mississippi was about the FIRST civil rights movement.

He has also portrayed a number of powerful real-life people. In Citizen Cohn he played Roy Cohn, Senator Joseph McCarthy's right-hand man who must have been Karl Rove's idol. He was at his weasely best in this one. Woods often plays smart weasels.

Perhaps his right wing label came from his portrayal of Guilliani, although it wasn't an entirely positive portrayal. Still, it came out almost immediately after 9-11, when Guilliani was the man of the hour.

18. True Believer
It was based on a true story; co-starred Robert Downey, Jr.; and he played a washed-up ex-hippie now defending drug dealers. He gets drawn back to his progressive roots by taking on a case of wrongful conviction, police tampering and all. The end is moving in that the man who had given up, languished in prison, was finally freed and the Woods' character returned to doing good defense work.

15. Ok, he is a registered Dem...
that likes bush and his policies, and hates Clinton for his "lies", but says he is not right-wing. Granted, he may have changed in recent months, but last time I saw info on his stance, he sounded pretty damn right-wing to me.

26. After 9-11 alot of Dems sounded rightwing.
Especially alot of New Yorkers.

After time and the 9-11 revelations showed the level of Bush's incompetence, eyes reopened for the most part. NYC voted almost 85% for Kerry. Those were the folks who paid attention to the information surrounding 9-11 and it showed in their votes.

21. I didnt know he was a dem, I knew he liked Bush though
I dont mind celebs with differing politics though, he's a good actor, Really portrayed Greg Powell as Wambaugh described him in the Onion Field well.

16. 'Salvador' changed my life-- literally
I saw it shortly after it first came out, when I was a teenager, and a product of the reactionary rurul suburb I grew up in. That movie led me to question what the Reagan administration was really all about, and why the rest of the world hated him.

Because of that movie, I got involved in peace and justice causes, and eventually into party politics. Sure, Oliver Stone is a conspiracy nutcase, but even a stopped clock gives the right time twice a day.

25. Changed my life too
I spent 2-3 yrs. in Central America with the military in 1983-1985. That movie was pretty damn close to what it was like down there. I still get a sick feeling in my stomach when I think about what we did to the people of Central America.
I saw the movie in 1988 with a buddy of mine who was also there with the military. He told me the movie made him feel like he was back there again.

you haven't already done so. It's by Missing's director and is about the military takeover of Greece.
