Has anybody here tried ostrich?
The Mrs. and I are going to Trader Joe's this evening, and we're thinking about picking up some ostrich. Anybody have it before? If so, any suggestions on how it should be prepared?

1. Yes, and it's GOOD!
I'd suggest doing it on the grill.

:)

2. Have had emu and loved it. Ostrich is probably similar
Emu is really good red meat. We had some roasts (sorta sized like a really big, thick steak) and ground emu, which made the best burgers a bunch of us ever had. We did a taste test with emu and really good ground beef at a party. Emu burgers won in a landslide.

Meat is VERY lean on the emu. If you get ground meat and make burgers, there is really no shrinkage.

My daughter gets the ground ostrich and the ground buffalo at Trader Joe's and says it's really good, easy on her sensitive gall bladder.

Seems a better way to raise red meat. Takes less resources per pound if I recall what my emu raising co-worker was saying.

4. I had an ostrich burger
several years ago at a fair and found it to be rather bland and dry. I'd suggest you marinade the meat. Cooking on a charcoal grill would be a good idea.:9

7. It's really good for your heart
marinate extensively the ground ostrich in ginger soy sauce (house of Tsang). Sautee with onions and garlic and serve with hopefully homemade apple sauce. Yummmm.

8. I tried it one Thanksgiving
Had so much trouble getting it into the oven. I had to tip the oven on it's back and jump up and down on the Ostrich.

The worst part was that I forgot to take out the bag of gizzards/liver from inside the chest cavity. Man, that is one long neck bone.

9. They say Ostrich has less fat, but you eat more of it.

10. I had it in a once
It had, I believe, a rasberry demiglaze. I didn't care for it that night, but I removed the demiglaze and took the rest to work the next day, and it was pretty good.

13. Had it once as an appetizer
at a restaurant (Don Jose's in Temple Terrace, FL). Don't know how it was prepared but it was good.
