It's not all on 'read the word as a whole' but also the fact that the word is embedded within a context. English encodes the grammar, and thus a large part of the overall meaning, in the word order (as opposed to languages like Russian that encode grammar on the words themselves, leaving word order to carry emotion and subtle emphasis)

Try not only scrambling the internal chars in each word, but the order of the words in the paragraph. Verrry hard to extract meaning.
