1. I refuse to answer, because in that day and age, "hang with"
had an entirely different meaning. :scared:

7. I hesitated, but ironically, I didn't want to make it sexual.
The idea is just to let people sit back and look at the pic--then imagine character. I discovered this pic tonight and am very taken with it.

2. None of them! Where are the Confederate officers?
Jeb Stuart was kinda cute. :-) Now, Robert E. Lee, was a gentleman! I'll take him.

And hanging means? Literally? or hanging out with?

And the guy to his right is checking him out, too!

14. The guy with almost no beard is a young guy.
The guy with arms crossed came to North America from...FRANCE!

But more later. I just want to see the outcome of the poll. This is fun.

36. There were a lot of young kids who fought in the Civil War.
Maybe that guy is one of them. It might be a matter of rank. I'm not sure if he is an officer, but my knowledge of those things is not good.

51. He was assigned from the adjutant-general's corps of his home state...
...sort of the national guard unit of his home state at the time.

So basically, the young guy was an officer with the permanent state militia, as opposed to either the permanent US Army, as the West pointers were assigned, or the state regiments organized purely for the purpose of fighting the civil war, and disbanded thereafter.

And he was young, but not super young.

The poster whose daughter picked him out would have looked forward to an extremely prosperous future had she wed him...

I'm just looking at a reaction to character.

Edit: If it makes you feel any better, at least two of these guys were dead within days of this photo--but that's not the point.

21. Sorry, no can do but as a human, mother, woman person, I feel real
pain and hurt for any and all young men that are sent to war and die because men can not learn to live and love and work together to make things right. God help us all. So little has changed in over 140 years.

We're not bloodthirsty; we just wouldn't want to hang around with any "fine" union soldiers. That's our reaction.

42. You are basing your reaction on another post.
Do you really carry that kind of provincialism in your heart today?

Because if the same thing had been asked of me about a pic of some Confederates, I would not have had some weird-ass, knee-jerk reaction. I would have looked at them and used my imagination and imagined my favorites.

That's all I was asking.

43. I'm not provincial.
I was raised in the third largest city in this nation--a northern city. You asked for our reaction, we gave it. Calling said reaction "weird ass" and "knee jerk" is uncalled for--if you don't approve, we don't care.

For you to say to us "if it makes you feel any better, two of these guys were dead within days of this photo" was insulting and mean spirited. No one feels any "better" for knowing that. It truly was a callous and tactless remark.

And his facial hair is a little different from that of the rest. But actually, if you showed these guys to some parents in the 1950's (without the context and uniforms), the parents may have become upset.

He and #2, the crossed arms guy, were dead shortly after this photo. There may have been other slain ones in the pic as well, but I know that the first two were. There is some interesting history behind this photo.

Do you think the Confederates found his stash?

44. I picked Major Wainwright, mostly due to his hot goatee...
...with no sideburns.

But I'm rather attracted to Lt. Col. Turner, as well. I belive another poster called him "robust". I would have to agree.

Oddly, the next battle in which their unit was involved also involved the 5th U.S. Cavalry, an officer of which was no other than Captain (at the time) George Armstrong Custer.

..and I just think the officers on both sides were hot, hot, hot!

(I have the First New York Light Artillery link posted by the other poster, but I knew who the young guy was as soon as I saw the photo and knew it was First New York.)

The young guy ended up one of the more acomplished characters to emerge from Civil War service.
