I've heard and loved many voices. Steve Perry, Dennis DeYoung, John Lennon, many more, but I think the most beautiful voice, in a man I've ever heard is Johnny Mathis. I feel like such a loser/nerd. Am I?

5. From about 1957-63, Mathis sang some of the greatest make-out music ever! |

If you play Johnny Mathis for your lady and you don't get lucky that night, then you just weren't trying, daddy-o! ;)

walking through a mall I heard him sing O Holy Night. I know everyone loves that one, but I sat down and cried. I rarely, rarely cry. Its his voice. He is one of the most uncelebrated treasures we have in this country, still alive. I know he's not cool, but when he dies, all of a sudden he will be. I say celebrate the him now. Sorry for the rant.

16. He was one of my late mother's two or three favorites. |
|
Even though it's been almost 11 years since I lost my mother, I still can't bring myself to listen to Johnny Mathis. Last time I tried, about five years ago, I couldn't stop crying. *sigh*

9. John Lennon? BTW, Mathis is cool, but I go with Aaron Neville. |
|
I love John Lennon, but a great voice?
I heard Mathis a lot as when I was a kid, on my parents' old records. I always loved him.
Who sings "Moon River," btw? That was on the same compilation album I used to hear "Chances Are" on all the time.

12. There were several versions of "Moon River." |
|
The three best-known, however, were Henry Mancini's original, the pop recording by Andy Williams, and the "Soul Lite" version by Jerry Butler.

about ten years ago, and I heard him sing O Holy Night, yes I know, how cheesy. I never cry, but I heard that song, and had to sit down and cry. He's one of the most unappreciated treasures we have, and no one will pay attention till he dies. Thats sad.

18. Unfortunately, his voice isn't what it used to be. |
|
About 20 years ago, I saw Mathis on PBS' "Evening at Pops." Even then, his voice had noticeably deteriorated.
On a related note, the same thing has happened to Frankie Valli's once-dynamic voice. :(

19. I think that's the saddest thing, |
|
But at his best, he was magic. Tell me I'm wrong, please. Tell me that Frank Sinatra, Bruce Springsteen, and Kurt Cobain were much better, I'm tired of feeling like the biggest nerd this side of my Grandma.

some singers perform, and some tell a story. Thats my criteria. When their voice tell's a story.
