A movie for DUers, that will rekindle your hope and reinspire you... |
|
"Salt of the Earth" (1954). This is a good film for DUers to watch. It was made under difficult circumstances (during the "blacklist" era) and it was even blacklisted after it was finished. It tells the true story of a strike at a New Mexico mine, although it may be partially fictionalized. It's valuable lesson in the history of the struggle of the common man vs. the capitalist oppressors. This film was made using many "real" people instead of actors, and some of the acting in it is very amateurish compared to most Hollywood movies. Also the sound quality is pretty poor. This is one film that really needs to be re-made today with better production values. Why the studios still won't touch it I don't really know. But you can rent the original from good video stores (it's usually not at large chain video places) and you can easily buy it on the internet at places like Amazon.com etc. I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in the eternal class struggle in the U.S.
