DU singers: favorite songs to harmonize to in car, etc? |
|
Edited on Sun Jan-02-05 12:28 PM by darkstar
I'll put myself in the singer category fairly loosly, but I love trying to sing harmonies that are difficult, not pitchwise but because they are odd, difficult (for me), outside of my usual vocabulary, what have you.
I like oldies stations for this purpose. Favorites include: Aquarius, Bus Stop, You Showed Me, Windy, Time of the Season, We've Only Just Begun, Afternoon Delight, stuff like that.
I'm usually honing in on the weird parts by the end of the tune, but next time I hear it, it's starting from scratch.
What songs do you find challenging?

2. A few, not terribly challenging but fun. |
|
Find the Cost of Freedom, Helplessly Hoping, One Tin Soldier, Mama Told Me Not to Come, Stuck in the Middle, many by XTC.
Christmas and Chanukah songs are fun to do, too. Especially in Latin and Hebrew.

4. Heaven, Happy home above... |

Any Doyle Lawson bluegrass gospel. We say the only thing wrong with gospel music is the gospel. Oh well, it is fun to sing.

5. i love that old time sing |

They do "singings" up here - sometimes the shape-note kind, and the harmonies are just haunting and beautiful.
You just gotta ignore a few of the words!

6. Me, Bono, and Jason Mraz rock out in my car. |
|
I believe all of U2's music is tuned down half a step because of Bono's voice--I harmonize perfectly with him, which is kind of scary!
Lately me and Jase have been hitting it too.

7. Doobie Brothers, Creedence, Steely Dan, LInda Ronstadt, |
|
Boz Scaggs, Loggins and Messina, CSNY
My favorite road trip CD's...if I can find an NPR station, I listen to that, or a GOOD oldies station...I am old enough to have hundreds of songs to harmonize on.
getting in on the harmonies is fun, even if I don't quite get there, and since I don't have a really good voice, I ususally don't get there.
