HELP ME! I need to organize my CDs! |
|
So my boyfriend got me a 200 CD book thing for Christmas. Not a very subtle hint - I moved into his house 3 months ago and I have all my CDs in a box in the living room - it is time to do something about it. I love the idea of getting rid of the cases and putting them all in the book, but how should I organize them?
Alphabetical? By genre? Randomly?
Genre seems the most obvious, but there is overlap, and I tend not to think of things in black and white so I can see myself fretting over "is this blues or jazz? Is this world music or techno-funk-fusion?" :freak: Most of my CD's will all fit into the book - I don't have that big a collection. And I have another book that holds about 80 for all my Phish and Grateful Dead bootlegs.
I need some pointers. Help?!

my brother, who passed away recently, left over 500 CDs - all in alphabetical order. Don't see how that can be done if they're in individual slots though (his were on shelves).

You should never have trouble finding anything that way.
The only thing that sucks is when you buy a new Aaliyah or ABBA CD.

4. I just did mine last night |

376 CDs in a new rack. I was a DJ last year and since my club closed it integrated the DJ stuff with my other CDs. Alphabetical is the only efficient way when you're dealing with large volume or you'll never find anything.
It reminds me of the movie High Fidelity how John Cusak's character was obsessed with arranging his record collection.

5. So alphabetical seems to be the consensus - but what about |
|
when you get new ones? Should I leave some empty spots or something?

7. Can you take out some of the "pages" now, and clip |
|
them back in as you add CDs--or buy additional pages for using later?
Mine is kind of like a looseleaf binder, so I can add pages as I need them.

Yeah, there's this little lock/unlock thing and I can take out pages! It's Case Logic brand, which seems like a familiar name, so I bet I can buy new pages if needed.
Thanks Lex!

but don't do what my friend did and alphabetize by first instead of last name. Drives me crazy when I look through his CDs.

... very poor luck trying to sort anything by genre. Unless your tastes are very pedestrian, you will find a bunch of cds that don't fit neatly in any category. You will agonize and dither, and the whole project will flounder :)
Save yourself a lot of hassle - alphabetical by artist is gonna work the best. Then, all you have to figure out is if "Iggy Pop" is a real name so goes under "P", or a sorta band name and goes under "I" :)
Substitute a current artist for my example

I one started an access database of all my CDs. Typing in artists and songs but that was just too nerdy so I stopped.

15. I alphabetize my CDs by artist. |
|
In the case of various-artists collections, I file them by title. I've been doing it that way for 15 years and have never had trouble finding a particular artist or song. And my collection numbers well over 2,000 CDs!

17. Too late, I just finished. |

Although I had been hoping for someone to dissent from the alphabetical. But I think for me alphabetical is the way. For the most part, I did chronological within artist, although somethimes when there were 2-dics sets I would rearrange to get them on the same page.
