Mention of flying "their" flag at half-mast for "ferners" causes a rash of
...exploding heads among those compassionate conservatives in Freeperville.

To save wear and tear on browsers, here are some highlights (lowlights?):

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1312285/posts

I will not fly our flag at half staff.
....
Bush is not authorized by any statute or Constitutional law to give away my money to disaster victims. That is my decision. These countries don't understand that they would probably get a lot more American money if it was all voluntary.
....
My flag(s) stays at full staff, period.
....
This great nation always has and always should help out when it can those that are less fortunate than us. However, to lower our flag for 5 days???? What American hero died over there? Don't cheapen our real heroes who are fighting the War on Terrorism and those heroes who are coming home in body bags!!!
....
Just read that part of the flag code, after calming down, So in a sense he does have that right to modify the code as he sees fit, however half staff should still be reserved for "Our" heros, not to memorialize every disaster that comes down the pike. And especially not for 5 days. Just my view on things.
....
Tourists??? Americans die every day around the world for various reasons. The flag being flown at half mast is a sacred tradition for Americans who have earned it. Being at the wrong place at the wrong time doesn't qualify. It only cheapens it for those who have had the honor before. Cripes in my town they've flown the flag at half mast because a teenager was killed in a car accident. Tragedy??? YES...but not an AMERICAN tragedy.
....
I will not fly mine at half-staff either. This is outrageous for GW to order this. I'm so livid po'd and lost so much respect for this POTUS.
....
Consider all the things which someone could call "natural disasters" as well. Maybe we should dip the flag for the first week of National AIDS month? Mark my words, the gay lobby is going to call for this and a Democrat administration will eagerly do it.
....
I think it's the five-day duration that is helping to stoke the fire. You could probably convince me that a day (or even two) would be appropriate given what you posted -- but a whole work week? Seems kinda excessive.

6. Oh how I enjoy it so!
Freepfucks finding out that their "president" doesn't give two shits about them! That he really doesn't care about gay marriage, or any of the other wedge issued used during the campaign.

They don't want to fly flags at halfstaff to show respect for the dead because they think it should be reserved for "heroes" such as troops returning in bodybags which they refuse to acknowledge and object to any news of being reported regarding said troops in the first place.

...flew the stars and stripes at half-mast over the death of that homophobic bigot, Reggie White. Assholes. :grr:

4. Wow...I was wrong
I thought as I travelled this past week and observed all the ragged, tatterd, faded and torn flags flying proudly from the posts of homes with Bush signs in their yard or on their cars that these people obviously had NO respect for the flag. Boy, is my face red!!

...love and support for the American people following the 9/11 attacks? Well, that tsunami has killed approximately 40 times more people than 9/11 did!

You fucking assholes have no respect or concern for anyone but yourselves. If they're not white and they're not American, fuck 'em! Right, freepers?

If I believed in God, I'd thank him every night for *not* making me think like you do!

Personally, I think it's a nice gesture for Bush to ask the American people to fly their flags at half-mast for five days. After the paltry amount of money he offered to help the disaster victims, it's the least Bush can do!

Finally, according to this morning's HARTFORD COURANT, here's the breakdown of the tsunami's death toll:

Indonesia: 80,246
Sri Lanka: 28,729
India: 8,955
Thailand: 4,812
Somalia: 200
Myanmar (formerly Burma): 90
Maldives: 73

Total: 123,184

...the freepers would gladly support flying the flag at half-mast for its victims!

Have I mentioned tonight how much I hate these people? :grr::nuke::mad:

Reading that, you'd think it was about torture.

After each rotation of the Earth as it orbits the sun, I'm more and more confident that nothing will ever work in our species. Just one conflict after another.

Let's hope they never have a devastating tornodo in their area and they suddenly find that the rest of the world no longer gives a fuck.

19. All voluntary?! What brainwashing pill is he on?! Heck, even I praise *:
We've all seen how *'s "voluntary" acts have led to no volunteerism of any positive sort.

If * had the flag lowered half-mast, THEN I APPLAUD HIM FOR DOING SO! Maybe it's late in the day, but at least he's done it. (and, yes, I've bitched about *'s politcizing the 10-fold increase in donation too. Lowering the flag is one thing. Let's see what happens afterwards.)

I'm not joking here (how I wish that I were), there are FReepers seriously suggesting that this was an intentional act of God to destroy paedophiles or muslims, or indeed both - they rarely bother to separate the two.

23. What pathetic , undereducated, selfish, self-righteous pricks they are
By their logic, the flag should not have been flown at half-mast for the WTC victims. They were "just in the wrong place at the wrong time." Or for that matter, for JFK. He was just in the wrong place at the wrong time too. What a pack of clueless nimrods.

24. This thread
confirms my suspicion that the flag is a political tool. This thread is a distraction, an argument over nothing.

Those that do not want to fly the piece of cloth at half mast-don't.

Those that want to fly the piece of cloth at half mast-do so.

I suspect most people just do not care one way or the other.
