Should Doctor Who regenerate into a woman?

(even a US news source had an article on it!)

(most informative info)

The BBC is producing a new version a new series, slated for 2005. (Um, they're 1 year late if they're aiming for a 40th anniversary celebration, which will occur on Nov 23, 1963...)

Stupid idea. Especially since people married to Time Lords may get quite a shock if their lover regenerates into the opposite sex... Even the 8th Doctor started snogging women all over the place and overtook James Kirk as being the horniest sci-fi character.

What's wrong with a female Time Lady companion?!

2. Without precedent in the Who universe, I think
Gender remains constant throughout regenerations, or so we've been led to believe. Despite the FAUX Dr. Who movie a few years ago being one of the worst pieces of SciFi trash I've ever seen, Paul McGann was a good Doctor and I'd like to see him continue the role.

3. No
Time Lords have always kept their gender before. If the Doctor did, there would have to be some explanation as to why he didn't before and why such a thing is rare. The great thing about the Doctor is that even though his incarnations and actors had their own personality quarks, the basic character of the Doctor stayed the same.
