Why popcorn in movies?
Started with sugar rationing during WWII.
Traditional movie munchie was candy bars, but now production was cut way back or non-existent.
Some bright guy came up with selling popcorn and the rest, as they say...

Ain't the Food Channel fun?
;-)

1. Yes, the food channel is fun!
Was that on a "Secret Life Of..."? I love that show.

And I love popcorn. I should go make some.

2. Yep. Couldn't remember the name of the show.
One of my faves.
I'm a walking encyclopedia on popcorn now.

3. Right now it's so the theaters can make
huge amounts of money by charging outrageous prices for popcorn and for the soda that you have to get to go along with it since it's so salty.

Really, it's insane that anyone pays those kinds of prices, even though I admit to doing it myself sometimes. You could get a pretty high quality meal in a nice restaurant for that kind of money.

4. True, but it's part of that movie-going experience for me.
It's unfortunate that movie theater popcorn isn't as good as it used to be, though.

11. I know. That's why I sometimes weaken and buy
the stuff anyway. Well, I at least try and smuggle in my own soda. That cuts off some of the cost and they'll usually give you a cup of ice for free. Too bad you can't really smuggle in popcorn.x(

12. EXACTLY!
I hate popcorn at the movies because I drink twice as much Coke to make up for it, then no matter how long I hold it, I have to pee at the most exciting part of the movie!

5. I would like to torture the person who thought it up.
As the movie food, that is. I inevitably get the seat in front of someone who rustles through the popcorn bowl and chews with their mouth open through the whole movie. It is my one major pet peeve. I prefer to watch at home because of it.

I know, I know. I'm a shrew.

6. no you're not
I'm with you 100%. I always get the guy who bought a bunch of stuff, digs through the plasticine bag (rustle, rustle) to get another cellophane-wrapped candy out (crackle crackle), unwrap it (rustle crackle) and then eat it (crunch crunch).

9. I always get that person too.
They always get the jumbo size and chew with their mouth open, shoveling it in like they haven't eaten in a week. I hate that sound.

I always get a small bag of popcorn but I chew with my mouth closed and don't rustle the bag in case their is anyone sitting next to me that would get annoyed like I do. ;)

7. Clean-up is easy...
I used to clean a movie theater. A blower, a broom and a shovel can clean up all of the spilled popcorn in a few minutes. All of the other crap takes time and energy.

8. More trivia: Popcorn in theatres is a North American phenomenon.
Edited on Sun Jan-02-05 05:55 PM by nine23
In movie theatres throughout the world, one MAY find some candy here and there, but that's about it.

Personally, I've drank more booze (from flasks, mini bottles, etc.) in European theatres than anything remotely edible. (The same applies to Quebec as well, though not at the big "chain" multiplexes...)

edit: Being from North America, this (no popcorn thing) really bugged me when I first lived in France and went to my first film. Then somebody handed me a little flask of Ricard...all was forgiven.
