Just wrecked my truck, Damn!
Driving on the overpass over 35 highway, got about half way across when the back end of my truck swung into the other lane. I got it straight for a moment then I slid across, hit the guard rail, slid across and hit the one on the other side, rode up on top of it but thankfully the back end of the truck was still going and I slid back wards and hit the other guard rail with the back and came to a rest after I once again hit the rail with my front end. Sheared the steering something or other so I could not turn my front wheels to get out of the road. Broke the suspension something or other and really messed everything up (except my pants, something I am pretty proud of since the drop off on both sides of the rails is substantial). I am so upset. Not hurt really, just sore all over and a little bruised. The sheriff told me I would have to pay for the guard rails! I did not know that.

1. Rats!!!
Glad you're not hurt.......

Trucks can be repaired easily....people are a little more complicated in the repair department....

Was it icy?

6. Just on the
bridges and overpasses. I didn't have a clue, it was not apparent intil I slid. It is a place I am usually going a little too fast but thankfully I was being careful and going slower than usual.

3. Glad you're okay!
Where on 35 did this happen? The weather is starting to really suck, and we can expect some icing in the am.

9. 35, just south
of Topeka, Kansas. It was just getting icy. The Sheriff said he slid past the turn off to come to the accident.

30. No, in Topeka.
I was not aware you were in OP. :hi: neighbor! Normally you know they are going to be slick but nothing except my deck had been slick all day and the overpass did not even look wet. Ah well, it is over and done.

36. Yeah hey back at ya neighbor
I live in OP but work in KCMO. Went to school in Emporia.

I come your way every couple months. A friend and I really like that Prairie Band casino north of Topeka.

We got nothing but rain today. During rush hour. It was a mess getting to work today. They are calling for freezing rain tomorrow.

up here in North Dakota. :P
Most any parking lot on Sunday morning. Just watch the light poles.

11. Actually we get
plenty here too and usually I do not have a problem. Last year I did go into a ditch but I was moving to let another truck pass on a road with large amounts of drifting on it. I pulled over and went right into the ditch.

Aaaah, the good old snirt up in Eastern North Dakota. All that snow/dirt (aka snirt) mix. You get dirt into everything.

snirt, I had not heard that but yes, that is exactly what happens. Last year we had a couple of good snows, the first in many years and they actually lasted a while. I am hoping for that this year too.

I'm glad to hear that you're not too terribly hurt. Take some advil or motrin if you've got it, though. It'll help for whatever pains may settle in overnight.

A car accident is a jarring experience. Try to relax as best you can, and, once again, I'm glad you're not injured too badly!

26. Me too.
I had no idea that you had to pay for those things. I thought that was something we already paid for with our tax dollars. My husband is pissed about that and figures since we had ice on our deck all day long that they should have salted or sanded those areas long before I came along. Thanks.

32. Damn ice
We're getting more ice storms these days, a consequence of global warming, (that doesn't exist). My wife had to get out in this and go to work this morning, I told her to watch the bridges because that's where the trouble would be.
I'm just northeast of you so we're getting the same crap, it'd be great just to be able to write off this entire week. i'm glad to hear you are'nt hurt, and aspeaking from experience tomorrow is when it catches up with you.

I am actually fine this morning, a little stiff is all and very weirded out by it all. We are coated in ice this morning and the weather forcast office says we are going to get freezing rain for the next two days. I may go rent a car and go stay at the farm so that I don't have to drive back and forth so much. I just hope we can keep our electricity on. Good luck to you, these ice storms are really a pain we are having to deal with so much more often.

33. That sucks!
It sounds like a classic case of oversteer when your rear wheels lost traction while you were accelerating. Are you tires in good shape? If they survived the accident you might want to check them out and perhaps replace them with winter/snow tires... I swear by Nokian snow tires.

At least you're unhurt, trucks can be replaced :-)

35. Thanks, my tires have
been ordered. They are not bald by any means but the ones I use are very strong for a big truck that pulls a big horse trailer and I noticed they were getting close to the point of needing new and I had ordered a new set already. The place where I lost it is the top of a hill right about mid point on the overpass. You are right, the damage had been done by the time I used my brake but the brake really spun me around once I used it. I think my steering was broken with the first hit. Yes, it can be replaced, I wonder what the insurance is going to do with it?
