Hey Newyawker, what's a good centrally located hotel in Manhattan?
I am starting to save money for a trip to New York towards the end of 2005 and want advice from New Yorkers (native and otherwise).

1. Hotel Pennsylvania
right across the street from Penn Station. You can get a nice room for $150.

2. Is the Hiatt at Grand Central still there?
It was great and we could walk to everything we wanted to see. Of course, the subway is right there also.

3. Stay at the Youth Hostel
I don't know if you are open to that, but a friend of mine went to NYC and stayed at one and he loved it. I think you can actually get your own room if you want, otherwise it's dormitory style. Cheap, only thirty bucks. Oh, and don't let the name fool you, it's not just for the youthful.

5. There are 100s to choose from
I would recommend using hotels.com or the travel site of your choice to price a few hotels, then ask for recommendations from these. I have stayed at some great boutique hotels (my favorite is The Kimberly and President Carter stays here from time to time), larger chains and classic NY hotels. The Penn is a very good price, but the rooms and halls are poorly lit and in need of a paint job. If that is not a problem for you, I have stayed at the Penn many times (including the two nights before the NY Bar Exam given a few blocks away at the Javits Center.

Do yourself a favor and find an inexpensive room. the Holiday Inn at 32nd Street is great, as is the Howard Johnson on 8th Ave and 52ish. But go to hotels and run a price search.

In NY price is a big deal. A cheap hotel is $150/night, but you can get deals in good places for under $100. Look for your dates and let us know.

7. Edison, Chelsea Savoy, Gershwin
Edison is theater district, an old standby. Chelsea Savoy is 23rd St - small rooms but perfectly clean and nice, Best Western style, pretty reasonable for Manhattan. Gershwin is East 27th - cool and funky, lots of Euro tourists, pretty reasonable.
