1. What's a liger?
It's pretty much my favorite animal. It's a mix between a lion and a tiger, bred for its skils in magic.

15. No, Old School is hilarious
The comedy is great in that movie. The characters act like jerks and they pay for it in the end. I didn't say that Napleon Dynamite was all bad, just that the majority of the comedy was mean-spirited.

13. You couldn't be more wrong.
The writer/director based much of it on his own experiences and family - he loves them and the characters in ND.

If you think it's mean it's probably because you're projecting.

38. Your opinion about the movie is fine. Your opinion about the people
Your opinion about the movie is fine. Your opinion about the people who like it (that they are LAUGHING AT HARDSHIP) is an insult.

Learn to embrace your inner Napoleon and abandon your shame.

39. I don't think anyone has a problem with your difference of opinion...
But they do have a problem with you assuming that the only reason they find humor in this movie is because you think that they feel that Napoleon is beneath them.

I love the movie, am watching it right now, and am laughing my butt off. Why? Because I was an awkward, gawky teenager in the eighties and I completely identify with Napoleon. Indeed, I would wager that most if not all of the people who have posted in this thread identify with Napoleon and aren't making fun of him, but are empathizing with him, with growing up an awkward teen. It has nothing to do with just rural America. It's more about being the "nerd" or "geek" in highschool and sharing Napoleon's experiences, and finally being able not only to laugh at Napoleon, but also at one's self.

At least that is my experience.

8. You must be projecting your own feelings of superiority
No one I know who loves Naploeon Dynamite does so because they think any behavior in it is BENEATH them.

11. Heck no!
I (and my friends) laugh because we recognize the same behaviors in ourselves - that's partly why it's so funny (at least to us).

14. Bingo.
It's even better after listening to the director's commentary - his brother DID call to be picked up because his lips hurt and asked for chapstick.

Sometimes I think everyone comes from a crazy family, but some of us try to hide it and some of us put it front and center.

Being from a front and center crazy family I saw immediately that Napoleon Dynamite is a work of love, not mean spiritedness.

24. Why is your lack of superiority limited to "rural America"?
You say you "don't feel superior to anyone who lives in rural America and tries to make a decent leaving".

Sp to whom DO you feel superior?

Computer geeks?

Urbanites?

Dude, YOU are the one who said people are laughing at behavior they feel is "BENEATH" them.

And those who love it are saying they IDENTIFY with it.

So you tell ME who thinks behaviors are beneath them.

32. I said that because that's where the movie takes place....
I was targeting the area that movie takes place in. Dude, whatever, I'm not going to argue about why I was entertained by a movie less than other people. I never should have said anything because apparently it's wrong to have a different opinion than mondo joe. Apparently it's not okay to feel superior unless you have an opinion about a movie. This is one of the dumbest arguments I've ever got into and it's over.

First you accuse people who like the movie of feeling some behaviors are BENEATH them.

Then you say we're laughing at HARDSHIP.

Then you say "apparently it's wrong to have a different opinion than mondo joe".

GOSH!

Get over whatever SHAME you are carrying around with you and learn to love your inner Napoleon.
