Who do you think is the best "musician" of our generation?
My vote goes to Prince. Without a doubt, the best of my generation. The man is unbelievably talented.

2. Probably few will agree with me,
but I'm voting k.d. lang. Incredible musician, even if not totally mainstream. I got to hear her live for the first time last fall and it was unbelievable. So talented.

25. I have to agree somewhat...
She has one of the most compelling voices going. I'd have to say it's even thrilling.

And I am highly critical of musicianship.

5. OH PLEASE! Prince?
He's a friggin' singer, dancer, showman and silly pop song writer.

There are Idiot Savants out there playing classical music that are 30 times the musician he ever thought about being.

7. I agree - not only that, but his voice sounds like he's constantly
taking a dump (and enjoying it).

10. "Idiot Savants", just who I want to represent my generation
his pop songs are not "silly"

I'm looking for one, to make a "well, this one is" droll, self-effacing statement, but I couldn't. How about you try?

11. Well, I say Prince for several reasons...
Edited on Mon Jan-03-05 03:56 AM by ALiberalSailor
1. He plays just about every instrument I can think of- very well.
2. He's a stunning songwriter.
3. He's remained relevant over so many years.
4. I saw Prince in Cadiz, Spain several years back and he played, for one of his encores, a very classic Flamenco tune. If you play guitar, you know how hard that is.

There are better drummers, better guitarists, and better songwriters, but I can't think of anyone who does all those as well as he does.

13. Well, if you want to consider . . .
. . . a hip wiggling, Little Richard wannabe look-alike, pop star whose works and image focus almost entirely on sex, the "greatest musician," knock yourself out!

16. It's not polite to put down another person's idol, even
if you happen to be right. LOL

Since we are probably from many different generations, my pick is Eric Clapton.

8. Of my generation?
My generation has yet to find it's defining voice. I heard some argue that Tupac Shakur was the "Jim Morrison" of my generation, I can see that. Musicianwise however, I still haven't found one from my generation that can even rival that of previous generation's "best," such as John Lennon.

17. I'd say Robert Pollard, but he's older than my generation....
Even though my generation has embraced him.

Of the younger dudes, I'd pick Geoff Farina of Karate: totally underrated and as-yet-undiscovered master guitarist, lyricist, songwriter, and singer.

21. Prince is a better guitar player than most of the supposed greats of R+R
Edited on Mon Jan-03-05 04:55 AM by bettyellen
i saw his tour this year, and a small club show after the hall of fame induction, and . it was if he had swallowed james brown, george clinton and jimi hendrix whole and spit em out better than they have ever sounded. i have never seen madison square garden so completely on fire and dancing like that, all the way to the rafters. you would have to see him live to get it, i think, becasue his albums are all over the place. i haven't heard one since sign of the times that i wanted to listen to all the way through.
he is such a strange hybrid of soul and rock and r+b that's impossible to categorize and most are only familiar with the hits, which are not his best work at all.
too many rock fans that have a big problem with his image and dislike anything you can really shake yer ass to, they think abba is good dance music. sigh. what are you going to do? shuffling your feet or pumping your fist in the air is good enough for some people.
they cannot abide a groove.
