Even with what I consider to be a thorough comprehension of the lowest decade in popular music, I cannot for the life of me understand the popularity of:
a) Supertramp
b) Elton John
c) The Bee Gees

...were replaced by, IIRC, James Young. The best album from that period is "Serpent is Rising", which is just...fucked up. The high-point is an accapella track about the eruption of Mount Krakatoa, which ends with an excerpt from Handel's Messiah, sung by the band, complete with a full-sized pipe organ!
