2. Thanks! Congratulations! |
|
I posted this at work and picked up the SB Diet book on the ride home. I was also going to get Atkins' Low Carb recipe book but changed my mind. The recipes were mostly for things I have no interest in eating anyway. The recipes that come in the South Beach book look good though.
Congratulations on your weight loss, that's terrific. I start this diet on Monday, it'll take me until then to rid the house of stuff I can't have. Until then I'll ease into it by just eating better (*snif* no more chocolate Haagen Dazs)

My dad lost 18 lbs. on SB Diet. And because the recipes are so delicious, many of them have become staples in our family!
Try the "mashed potatoes." They really aren't as bad as they sound. LoL!

21. I went back to phase one yesterday. |

I still have a way to go to hit my target weight. You might want to get the SB cookbook, it has a lot of great meals in it. Also check out foodnetwork.com. they have a few good low carb ideas.
Maybe we should start a SB support forum, or just a diet support forum in general.

I've lost 50+ on the Zone and have felt really great doing it. It makes a huge difference in how much energy I have, and really promotes healthy balance.
I feel like such a shill saying that, but I really do pimp it out to anyone who asks because I love it so much.

6. What are the reasons you picked the Zone over SB & vice versa? |
|
I realize there are differences in the way the diets work & how they are designed of course, but skimming the websites and book summaries on the 2, it seems South Beach is more low-carb, am I right?
I'm reactive hypoglycemic, meaning I'm very sensitive to sugar. It sends my moods all over the place, drastically. I tried Atkins and did very well on it at first, had more energy and really did feel a lot better. But in time (and I did do it according to the book) I went off the diet for numerous reasons. Reading the info, it seems like South Beach may be a better fit for me.
I reached a weight I said I'd never get to and now I have serious lower back pain because of it. So I just want to find a diet that won't make me feel too restricted, will level out my blood sugar and help me lose weight kind of quickly, without being unhealthy. Because my back hurts right now the chiro says I can't exercise yet, which stinks, because I want to get things going.

South Beach is about controlling your intake of high glycemic index foods (the ones that cause the peaks and valleys in blood sugar control)

One thing that I'm finding confusing the book, is that the book says you can eat real eggs and drink caffeinated coffee but then the recipes I went to first called for egg substitute and decaf.
I'm not a big fan of processed substitution stuff. I don't feel like I'm actually eating food if I use fake eggs.
And on edit, I can't replace reg coffee with decaf either. Just can't.

12. Their meal plans have the egg sub and decaf but that's just the plan |
|
they say in 2 places you can use whole eggs unless a doctor says not to and if you like coffee a few cups isn't going to hurt.
Their fear with coffee is that cafeine stimulates the apetite not that its going to mess with the function of the diet

Appetite suppressant "diet pills" usually contain caffeine.

Caffeine temporarily speeds metabolism, but it was also supposed to reduce the appetite. There were days long ago when I lived on cigarettes, black coffee, and diet Coke, so I suppose there's something to that.
My diet's a bit healthier these days.

I thought that was the case, yet I thought also that certain recipes called for the egg substitute for a reason, and using the real eggs might throw off the nutritional count of the recipe somehow.
Thanks.

They're really not fake. Most brands of egg substitute are made with 99% real egg whites. I like them, but I understand why some people don't - they don't have quite the full flavor and texture of a whole egg. If you want to eat regular eggs but lighten it up a bit, use a whole egg along with two egg whites.
