8. WTF Night Train?
She's been around for like 8 years!

Here's her AMG bio:
Singer/songwriter Fiona Apple gained a recording contract in 1995 as one in a crop of mid-'90s female artists, but her confessional writing and throaty vocals made the teenager sound like much more than just the latest flavor. Born in 1977 in New York to singer Diana McAfee and actor Brandon Maggart, Fiona Apple began playing the piano at the age of eight and started composing her own songs just four years later, after the separation of her parents and her own brutal rape. After leaving high school at the age of 16, she journeyed to Los Angeles to see her father and make a demo tape of her songs. After several months of tape-passing, Sony Music signed Apple in 1995.

After recording Tidal with producer Andrew Slater, she released the album in mid-1996 and began touring. Constant video play of the single "Shadowboxer" on both MTV and VH1 brought Tidal into the upper reaches of the album charts. The long-awaited When the Pawn Hits the Conflicts He Thinks Like a King What He Knows Throws the Blows When He Goes to the Fight and He'll Win the Whole Thing 'Fore He Enters the Ring There's No Body to Batter When Your Mind Is Your Might So When You Go Solo, You Hold Your Own Hand and Remember That Depth Is the Greatest of Heights and if You Know Where You Stand, Then You Know Where to Land and if You Fall It Won't Matter, 'Cuz You'll Know That You're Right — the album's full title — followed in 1999.

13. Well, she had a big hit.
Sold a crapload of albums.

I just figured you would know, being all into music.

Not that this is YOUR type of music by any stretch.

She's ok, a little earnest for my taste, but I guess that's just me.

18. I stopped following Top 40 radio and music in 1985.
Once I got into college, I lost interest in mass-appeal pop hits. For some odd reason, Glen Frey's "The Heat Is On" just didn't do it for me. Go figure. ;)

25. She is worth listening to
At times she is very good, and at times she is hackneyed (often within the same song). I've always loved her first album, despite it's flaws.

Edited on Mon Jan-03-05 10:41 PM by Amaya
CRIMINAL

I've been a bad, bad girl
I've been careless with a delicate man
And it's a sad sad world
When a girl will break a boy
Just because she can
Don't you tell me to deny it
I've done wrong and I want to
Suffer for my sins
I've come to you 'cause I need
Guidance to be true
And I just don't know where I can begin

What I need is a good defense
'Cause I'm feelin' like a criminal
And I need to be redeemed
To the one I've sinned against
Because he's all I ever knew of love

Heaven help me for the way I am
Save me from these evil deeds
Before I get them done
I know tomorrow brings the consequence
At hand
But I keep livin' this day like
The next will never come

Oh help me but don't tell me
To deny it
I've got to cleanse myself
Of all these lies till I'm good
Enough for him
I've got a lot to lose and I'm
Bettin' high
So I'm beggin' you before it ends
Just tell me where to begin

What I need is a good defense
'Cause I'm feelin' like a criminal
And I need to be redeemed
To the one I've sinned against
Because he's all I ever knew of love

Let me know the way
Before there's hell to pay
Give me room to lay the law and let me go
I've got to make a play
To make my lover stay
So what would an angel say
The devil wants to know

What I need is a good defense
'Cause I'm feelin' like a criminal
And I need to be redeemed
To the one I've sinned against
Because he's all I ever knew of love

What I need is a good defense
'Cause I'm feelin' like a criminal
And I need to be redeemed
To the one I've sinned against

Because he's all I ever knew of love

11. Haven't heard much from her lately.
I think her voice is good and she shows great depth in her delivery. I am interested to see how she matures as an artist, because I was very impressed with stuff like "Criminal". But (I'm no popular music maven--so I apologize in advance) I don't know she's done much since her break out in about 1998 or 99. Unfortunately, to develop a good following, it helps to stay out there.

22. My feelings also
'Never Is A Promise'

You'll never see -- the courage I know
Its colors' richness won't appear within your view
I'll never glow -- the way that you glow
Your presence dominates the judgements made on you

But as the scenery grows, I see in different lights
The shades and shadows undulate in my perception
My feelings swell and stretch, I see from greater heights
I understand what I am still too proud to mention -- to you

You'll say you understand, but you don't understand
You'll say you'd never give up seeing eye to eye
But never is a promise, and you can't afford to lie

You'll never touch -- these things that I hold
The skin of my emotions lies beneath my own
You'll never feel the heat of this soul
My fever burns me deeper than I've ever shown -- to you

You'll say, Don't fear your dreams, its easier than it seems
You'll say you'd never let me fall from hopes so high
But never is a promise and you can't afford to lie

You'll never live the life that I live
I'll never live the life that wakes me in the night
You'll never hear the message I give
You'll say it looks as though I might give up this fight

But as the scenery grows, I see in different lights
The shades and shadows undulate in my perception
My feelings swell and stretch, I see from greater heights
I realize what I am now too smart to mention -- to you

You'll say you understand, you'll never understand
I'll say I'll never wake up knowing how or why
I don't know what to believe in, you don't know who I am
You'll say I need appeasing when I start to cry
But never is a promise and I'll never need a lie

36. First Taste
' THE FIRST TASTE '
Words & Music: Fiona Apple

I lie in an early bed, thinking late thoughts
Waiting for the black to replace my blue
I do not struggle in your web because it was my aim to get caught
But daddy longlegs, I feel that I'm finally growing weary
Of waiting to be consumed by you

Give me the first taste, let it begin heaven cannot wait forever
Darling, just start the chase -- I'll let you win but you must
Make the endeavor

Oh, your love give me a heart contusion
Adagio breezes fill my skin with sudden red
Your hungry flirt borders intrusion
I'm building memories on things we have not said
Full is not as heavy as empty, not nearly my love, not nearly my love, not nearly

Give me the first taste, let it begin heaven cannot wait
Forever
Darling, just start the chase -- I'll let you win, but you must
Make the endeavor

Paper Bag and Sullen Girl are another two of my favourites :)

26. Good song...
'Sleep To Dream'

I tell you how I feel, but you don't care
I say tell me the truth but you don' t dare
You say love is a hell you cannot bear
And I say gimme mine back and then go there - for all I care

I got my feet on the ground and I don't go to sleep to dream
You got your head in the clouds and you're not all what you seem
This mind, this body, and this voice cannot be stifled by your deviant ways
So don't forget what I told you, don't come around, I got my own hell to raise

I have never been so insulted in all my life
I could swallow the seas to wash down all this pride
First you run like a fool just to be at my side
And now you run like a fool, but you just run to hide, and I don't abide

I got my feet on the ground and I don't go to sleep to dream
You got your head in the clouds and you're not all what you seem
This mind, this body, and this voice cannot be stiffled by your deviant ways
So don't forget what I told you, don't come around, I got my own hell to raise

Don't make it a big deal, don't be so sensitive
We're not playing a game anymore; you don't have to be so defensive
Don't you plead me your case, don't bother to explain
Don't even show me your face, 'cuz it's a crying shame
Just go back to the rock from under which you came
Take the sorrow you gave and all the stakes you claim --
and don't forget the blame

I got my feet on the ground, and I don't go to sleep to dream
You got your head in the clouds, and you're not at all what you seem
This mind, this body, and this voice cannot be stifled by your deviant ways
So don't forget what I told you, don't come around, I got my own hell to raise

33. From the DU rules...
Don't post entire copyrighted articles. If you wish to reference an article, provide a brief excerpt and include a link to the original source. Generally, excerpts should not exceed three or four paragraphs.

-------------

Seems like posting entire copyrighted songs would be the equivilent of posting entire copyrighted articles...

41. Love her! She's great
I own both albums and enjoy them a lot. I don't listen to her as often anymore. I don't get moody and depressed like I once did, so I'm not into her as much.

There are still certain songs that force me to think about someone in my past, like Shadow Boxer. Some strong memories are associated with that album.

43. I remember she made some funky comments at an awards show
like 10 years ago and I thought she was kind of flakey. I'd like to see her put on about 10 pounds.

46. I love Fiona Apple!
She's extremely talented. Her and Alanis Morissette are my two favorite female vocalists. I have both her albums, and I absolutely love 'em. Plus, she's pretty hot (in a heroin chic kinda way), and she's very, very liberal. She also wrote one of my favorite lyrics: "You say love is a hell you cannot bear, and I say give me mine back and then go there, for all I care!" from "Sleep to Dream." I may have been one of the few people who thought her MTV rant was hysterical. LOL

When the Pawn is probably my favorite album ever!

rachel yamagata.

i've receieved one of her cd's for xmas, and it's given me a little relief from my fiona drout.

get the CD happenstance, sometimes i forget i'm not listening to fiona.. but she's got her own thing, it just meshes with fiona's stuff more than often.

it's worth a look, honestly

48. Since you asked...
Not, based on my one experience of her, an episode of that annoyingly trendy, self-conscious and self-congratulatory PBS show Studio at West 57th or whatever it was called. (I did like a lot of the music on there, but I hated the presentation.) Anyway, I didn't get the whole candle on the piano, tortured poetry, straining for the random high note thing. But I'd give her another chance.

I LOVE her. I love her voice, I love her music; very melodic and dark, I love the way she looks, I love her lyrics. I can listen to her all day long.

65. Why is it that everyone that's a little thin must get
heavier? Maybe her weight is just her.

I like both of Fiona's albums pretty equally BTW. Tidal really grew on me.

66.  FYI she's bulimic
She's been in treatment for it since. But at the height of her career she was in the midst of serioius eating disorder.

And sporty spice.. anorexic

86. How insensitive and heartless
Fiona Apple was raped as a really young child, and as a result developed a severe case of ANOREXIA, not bulimia.

She also suffers from the results of self-injury, largely as a response she had to negative reviews of her first album.

87. I had dinner with her mom.
Actually, her mom is friends with my stepsister and came to my family's holiday dinner. Very nice, beautiful, outgoing woman. I gave her a "Not Me" bracelet as a stocking-stuffer and she asked for one for each of her daughters (Fiona Apple and Maude Maggart, who sings cabaret-type songs). So you may see either or both of them wearing the Not Me bracelet some time soon!
