There's somethingall wrong with the proportion of some of the people in this photo. Either it's a crazy reduction in depth of field (a technique to make crowds look morer dense than they actually are), or some sort of shrink-ray that only works on Edward Norton wannabes...

The women in front are standing on steps. It is also probable that the picture was taken with a wide angle lens which would also distort the sizes of the foreground (larger) and background (smaller).

12. It * does* look a bit odd at first

I think it is just perspective. A pretty wide lens, with forground people (and not small people) who are much closer to camera relatively, and at least 3 steps up from the freepy boys. Might even be a cheaper lens that at that length has a little more distortion (widening) on the edges, and less in the middle.

Also, the people are purple-ish blue, so this may be taking place on Mars.
