1. Do you have any parameters at all?
Do you randomly think of articles or is this for a class?

Is America the Most Generous Country - the World Reacts to the Tsunami

In honour of MLK day coming up - A Report Card on Civil Rights

Something on a local issue

Compare the world you'll be entering this year (after you graduate) to the one your father entered (the year he graduted)

He graduated to the early years of Nixon. But I found my idea but thanks anyhow, I am writing Bob Marley's enduring popularity even today.

7. Hi, John.
Yes -- tell us the parameters so we can hone in a little better.

Some article topics that would keep you awake and make pretty good papers:

the snake-handling congregations of Appalachia

Jesus' love for the young John the Beloved One

Peter Best -- the early drummer for the Beatles

Castratos -- the tradition of castrating singers to preserve their voices

Warren Harding: was he murdered by his wife out of jealousy?

Len Swann -- turning to ballet to improve his agility on the NFL turf

Ok. How about "The Least Effective --
-- President in U.S. History" ?

Warren Harding, Franklin Pierce, Richard Nixon...

(By the way, Harding's wife may very well have murdered him -- by poisoning -- out of sexual jealousy. It really would make a manageable article topic.)

25. He was. He never seemed to even want to --
-- be president. But he loved his mistresses.

Another possibility is Lincoln's alleged interest in the occult. In the dark days of despair over the War Between the States, he was alleged to have been secreted away to seance groups, either to contact the spirit of his dead son, and/or to find a way to bring the states back together. Eerie and possible -- might be a good subject.

The Lincoln stuff is from a book called WILLIE SPEAKS.

8. How long do you have? Can it be on absolutely anything? Will you
Edited on Mon Jan-03-05 11:15 PM by Pirate Smile
be able to do research? Does it need to be something you have some personal knowledge of?

edit to add more questions: Is it just for the teacher or will it be shared with the class or is it for the school paper?

Informative? Funny? Which way are you wanting to go? Both?

Political?

9. How about...
something to do with this administration's support for abstinence only sex education programs, even though studies consistently show that abstinence only programs are not only ineffective but dangerous as well.

Just saw it on the Daily Show and I figured it would be good for a nice young high school journalist like yourself to get to the bottom of.

11. Does everybody know that NCLB included that all their names and info
have to be turned over to the Selective Service?

Are they aware of the Prez's new initiative to get everyone's mental health checked?

There are a lot of things going on that might blow people's minds.

31. It could be a "Did you know ---?" kind of article that includes a lot of
information but with only a short paragraph explaining a bunch of different things.

Do people know what happens to all their personal information that Credit Card companies get, who they sell it, etc.

You know the people on this site could help you find a ton of stuff that most people are clueless about.

It wouldn't have to be in depth. Just a bunch of short snippets with just enough info to make you go "oh, sh@#!"

Or - pick one issue and go for that.

21. Here's an easy feature story for you
New Year's Resolutions. How likely are people to keep their resolutions? What are the most common resolutions? Go to the local gym and find out how many more members have signed up this January. Talk to the new members and ask them how dedicated they're going to be on their resolutions. Ask the gym managers if January is traditionally their busy month (it is).

It's a very timely piece, which will win you points with your prof.

Are you a J student?
