8. That's an ignorant statement - "she isn't a Latin artist"
She was born in Colombia and her first language is Spanish. One of her parents happens to be Lebanese, which is where she gets her Arabic roots, but her other parent is Colombian.
As far as musical influences go, she is mainly a rocker, bred on the likes of AC/DC and Led Zepellin.

How can you reduce a talented artist into a bellydancer???? Bellydancers are talented...Shakira is the best one in the world. She isn't the best singer but she is the best bellydancer...How am I degrading her by calling her a bellydancer? :wtf:

26. First you said she does only ARABIC music
Yet, I have yet to hear her sing a single song in Arabic.
Then you said she "isn't a Latin artist", although she was born in Colombia and was raised speaking Spanish.
And all throughout this thread you insist on labeling her nothing but a belly dancer.
Yes, she might be a talented belly dancer, but that is not what got her signed to an American label. She writes her own songs and music. Maybe some didn't translate well for certain Americans to appreciate the songs, but it wasn't the belly dancing that got her signed.

27. Thank you
She's not, first and foremost, a bellydancer. She just happens to bellydance. She's a very talented musician and songwriter. I don't like her American career because I think her voice loses a lot of power in English (maybe it's her discomfort w/ the language). She's a talented bellydancer to be sure but it is unfair to reduce her to just that.

30. I highly doubt that
Have you seen every single bellydancer? There are plenty of talented bellydancers in the Middle East so I doubt Shakira is the greatest bellydancer. I object to you reducing her to simply being a dancer when she does far more than that. She got signed in Latin America because she is a talented musician and songwriter. She got signed her and produced by Gloria Estefan's husband because they saw the same talent in her. She didn't get signed her because of her bellydancing skills.

31. I didn't say anything about why she was signed
Obviously her music is quite good...I was talking about what makes her famous with the audience, is it her voice or her dancing??? I believe the average fan loves her dancing more than her music. And she is the best bellydancer, she is praised on Arabic TV constantly...

35. I'm a fan and I think her dancing is fantastic
but she wouldn't grab my interest if she was just a dancer. Maybe her American audience is entranced by her bellydancing because her English language offerings aren't as great as they should be. And I'm sure there are plenty of other bellydancers who have honed their craft for years who are probably better bellydancers since that is what they do for a living. Hell, I knew a girl who bellydanced as well as Shakira. Shakira bellydances as an added effect to her shows. It's not what primarily defines her.

Cause you take a Latin American artist, who has struggled and paid her dues to get signed to a market with a language foreign to her, and you act as if you're complimenting her by calling her the "best bellydancer that ever lived."

It's not much different than those people who said denzel washington won an oscar for training day because he was the best black actor that year.

It smells of racism.

it doesn't make either of us a racist...some consider Enrique a pure latin artist...I understand where are coming from...If I considered someone to be a purely Arabic artist and I found some people who I thought were trying to diminish that I would probably think they're racist...be careful with the 'R' word..I am half-hispanic and portuguese. I grew up with Latin music and I love Shakira to death...

46. Maybe what you consider a "latin artist" is someone who plays only
samba, cumbia, salsa, etc., someone who only sings in spanish and sticks firmly to those latin influences.
But what i consider a latin artist is someone who was born in latin america, grew up in that culture and took those musical influences, as well as all the other influences they grew up listening to, whether it be heavy metal or arabic music (as in shakira's case), and turned it into their own music.
To me, being a latin artist is a cultural thing, not necessarily a music genre.

at least you can admit that her music doesn't represent Latin music that well...That was my point entirely:) I love Shakira but she has become more pop and I'm a little disappointed by it. I guess I remained a fan only because of her bellydancing...That's my only reason for loving her now...well, gotta go..you gave me the best damn debate since I joined DU. Thanks!!!

and wasn't even raised in an Ecuadorian household because her father wasn't around (which was for the best). I doubt she'd be highly influnced by Latin music. Enrique Iglesias is Spanish and he sucks so I'd rather not count him in my ranks.
