Did anybody else see Sideways?
Edited on Tue Jan-04-05 05:54 AM by BullGooseLoony
Damn, that movie was good.

It's the kind of movie a lot of people won't like. But, me, lemme tell ya, I just loved those characters. And the whole movie was set down in the Santa Barbara/Buellton area- which my girlfriend and I JUST got home from after visiting. The whole time while they were driving around we were pointing and saying "We just SAW that!" and laughing.

The guy mentioned another character being married to a philosophy professor at UCSB. I have my B.A. in philosophy- from UCSB.

And the woman love interest comes into a bar (pulls out a cigarette, even though it's illegal- they smoke in a bowling alley, too) and she's smoking American Spirits, my cigarette of choice, of course. She also uses a new type of corkscrew that my girlfriend and I just happened to get this Christmas. We'd never even seen it before.

It was too weird.

And the movie itself was just hilarious and poignant and well written and just great. So NOT pretentious, although that's the biggest criticism I hear of it from people. And not all that depressing, either.

Many critics called it the best movie of 2004. I think I have to agree.

1. Saw it, loved it.
I agree in that it wasn't pretentious. The characters were almost perfectly cast.

My only "complaint" is that you saw closure, or could at least assume what happened with the characters at the end, except one (which I won't say here...spoiler).

I also have a much finer appreciation for pinot...

3. I LOVED it BullGooseLoony
Great writing and performances (and soundtrack too!) I haven't laughed that hard at a movie in a long time. Plus, I'm a wine goober. I didn't find it pretentious at all.

Gotta see it again! :P:hi:

4. That's a good idea...
I gotta do that too.

Might even go back to the theater.

I get the feeling I missed a lot in the beginning...you gotta settle in with the two guys in that movie before you really get into it. Took me prolly 20 minutes...Well worth it, though.

5. One of the best movies
in a long time. Not the usual Hollywood crap, just real people doing real things.

I'm reading the book right now, and only minor details are different along with a few incidents left out that the movie didn't need. It'll be interesting to see if it ends the same way the movie did. Right now I'm up to Wednesday of the week in question.

6. I think Paul Giamatti could be my favorite actor, now.

He's played so many great roles- starting, I believe, with Pig Face in "Private Parts." :)

PG as Harvey Pekar......sweet little weird film.

I've been looking forward to seeing 'Sideways' but haven't had the opportunity yet.

12. Oh, yeah....he was good in that, too.
Now that movie was depressing....

Pretty good, though. :)

I liked him in "Man on the Moon." Great role for him.

13. To me - it was the best movie of the year in a year of really good
Edited on Tue Jan-04-05 05:29 PM by Lindsey
movies. I LOVED it and can't wait to see it again. I also went up to that area with an ex-girlfriend (just a few months ago). It's a really cool part of California...the ostrich scene cracked me up 'cause they really are mean! The movie was so real - flawed but endearing characters. Apparently, it's made a lot of the top movies of the year lists so maybe it'll get some oscar nods - it really should!

14. I think Virginia Madsen should get a nod for her performance,
too.

She was really exquisite...she had people hanging on her every word.
